A/C Help Needed for '03 Suburban 1500

A/C worked in March, stopped in April.
Mechanic replaced ambient sensor, said I had plenty of refrigerant, but the a/c clutch was probably bad - $1300.
I replaced the clutch/coil and it worked for 30 minutes, but I hadn't properly secured the snap ring - the coil spun and fried. I replaced the clutch/coil again; it worked for 3 minutes and stopped - blown fuse. Fuse doesn't blow if compressor is disconnected. Replaced wiring connector - fuse still blows. Jumped the 87/30 terminals in the fuse box, clutch clicked and blew the fuse. Checked coil with multimeter and got less than 1 ohm. Is the coil bad and I need to replace it, or is it the compressor?

Coil is blowing fuses, likely due to a failed compressor. Sounds like the compressor is locked up and needs to be replaced.

Failing compressor has nothing to do with amp draw. The amp draw of the coil remains constant regardless of the load upon the clutch.

 

1 ohm is going to pull WAY too many amps. Either the wiring, or the coil itself is shorted.

 

Instead of going through handfuls of fuses troubleshooting this, you can stick a 194 bulb harness or another test light in there in place of the fuse. If the bulb lights bright, just like when touched to the battery, then the short remains.
