Trans questions? I may be able to help

I am a former transmission technician. I worked at an independent shop for over 6 years. If you have any questions I can usually point you in the right directon. I have seen several shift complaints in the Gm truck line. The majority of my experience is with everything up to 2003/2004. I left the industry to go back to school. Got a weird complaint, wondering what parts are prone to failure let me know :D

ok I have one for ya....... I have a 02-2500 hd 6.0 cc sb and when it is cold and driving in say 3rd gear and you shift into overdrive it sorta downshifts (does this all the time hot and cold)....maybe not downshift but the rpms go up.....then inorder to lock the the torque converter you need to give it 1/2 throttle....when the converter locks it does so very slowly....if I back off the gas the converter unlocks and goes back to 3rd gear....once the truck is really warm it goes away......I dont remember it doing it last year but who knows.....is this normal or.......ideas?

p.s. westers is on the way

I am assuming this is a 4l80e. what type of driving do you usually do when this happens highway, city, first thing in the morning, all the time. Any check trans lights, reduction of gas milage and how many miles? There was a problem with the torque converters where the converter clutch plate had a crack in it. It would have either a low slip condition or no apply at all. The easiest way to tell is to hook it up to a scan tool and moniter the converter slip speed is less than 100rpm (that what gm says is okay) But I liked seeing less than 25 rpm. We were seeing this problem at about 30 to 50 thousand on trucks for car dealer we would do work for.

I hope this may help.

Is there a way to flush a TC that doesn't have a drain plug with the trans already removed?

nope. If you had something come unglued in the trans. It is best to change out the converter. If it is for a factory replacement make sure the stall speeds are the same.

um lets see just hit 10000 miles and it is the worst first thing in the morning around town. No warning lights and mileage is about 9-10 on average with some highway, best I've gotten is 12. I broght it to the local chevy dealer and they said they couldnt get it to do it but as soon as I got in it did it.

i do beleive its the 4l80e

I have a question...

I have a 2003 Z71 Suburban... it's got 15000 KMS on it... (approx: 9000 Mi)

I checked the dip stick for the level & it says low... so I topped it up (I did this with the engine @ operating temp.(usually needle is pointing to the middle of the temp gage175 I beleive in F)..in park ... the whole bit.)

the next day, after school, I checked it again... @ the same location, in my underground garage (which is level... ) it's showing low again...

Now, could it be that the dealer or even factory, have forgot to top it up?

Is it low? Should I keep on adding fluid till I see it on the cross hatch? I don't want to over fill.

I'm not new to this (checking trans fluid levels)... just new at owning a GM truck. Have rented some in the past... I see fluid... with the rentals.

WHat's up with that? :sigh:

Thanks in advance

I've got a 1990 gmc 2500 that just started gushing out trans fluid when I shift into reverse. It looks like it's shooting out a hole in the top passenger side of trans. Could a plug or sensor of fell out?
