I've been amazed lately about the 0-60 and 1/4 time on the new cars. Either my truc is badly slow, or these are are fibbing on the numbers or realy, insanley good at launcing cars.

It haunts me that if I pull up next to a new CRV with a I-4(about 160HP and torque)and a 5-speed manual, it will eat my lunch. samw with a Saturn VUS and Ford Escape V-6 with auto. A chevy extended cab long bed with a 4.8 could probably stomp me. and the listr only gets bigger, and the engines get smaller.

How are underpowered baby-utes so freaky quick? I should be on a step behind a 5.3 extended cab with short bed chevy 1500, I have somewhere around 260HP and 360 Torque, the new chevy is about 7-800 ponds heavier, yet I'm more than a seconds slower in the 1/4!

Maybe its just that these guys are super good and Those times will never be seen ith even a above average driver, but My best time at the track will be high 16's unless I do more mods. I'm currently looking for a pre '91BMW to put into mild racing condidtion, if I find one the way I want(rough but runs good straight body, perfect for minor "restoring"), my truck might go bye-bye.

The magazine guys have a distinct luxury that you or I can't enjoy.  The fact that it's not their car.  Sure, we could shave a couple tenths off just by perfecting our technique, but it really puts alot of wear and tear on the vehicle.  I think the quickest published time for a 2002 Corvette Z06 is something right around a 12.5.  I managed to do a 12.8.  But I had a borrible 60 foot time.  Like 2.25 or something.  With a lot of runs, I could get off the line with less wheel hop and get a couple tenths off, but the clutch, axles, tires, and so on would definitely lose some reliability.

And, the time you think a 5.3 ext cab short box can do should be more like the high 15's believe it or not.  The newer engines have fatter power bands.  Especially the GENIII V8s like the 5.3.

Import Hater is right... Another thing you gotta consider is that these guys are  testing usually at or near sea-level... Here in NM Ive only seen a few Z06s break into the 12s... And those were on cold nights at the lowest elev. track (Roswell 3530)

remember that the underpowered utes have an advantage - weight.  they are small vehicles.  also remember that when it comes to towing your truck will win
