Stearing Problem

Does anyone know anything of this problem?

When turning to the right in idle and in gear, steering binding. Is this due to low idle RPM or is there more to it?

I did find some remarks of the said problem on other sites, but I would like to here more from this forum.

Thank you in advance.

There could be several causes:

1. If it is fighting against you like it does when the truck is not running, check your fluid level.

2. If the truck bounces around when turning, something might be engaged in your 4x4 system that has caused the front axle to lock itself.

I had the same problem on my '99 Sierra 2wd 5.3L. I replaced the steering rod, and it went away. In the old steering rod, the seals had dried out, and causing havoc on the system.

It works like a charm now.

I've had the same problem and have posted it on this site, do a search. Nothing ever came of it though. Every time I go to the dealer for it the truck doesn't do it.

They can't duplicate it and have thoroughly checked everything out (they say). So I've just been dealing with it. Mine mostly does it when I first start the truck and start to take off. After I get going then it's fine. It does p*ss me off cause I almost hit a car in the parking lot at work because of it. I've only got about 38k miles on mine. That's the other thing, my warranty is done for. At least it's documented that I took it in.

To rbb0002- how big of a job was replacing the steering rod? How much money? Thanks

What about the EVO sensor. I have heard these things can cause sluggish steering at slow speeds. I don't know for sure if your year vehicle has this sensor. I hear they are about 50$$. They mount to the column from what I have read.

 I Took it in the dealer today so they can look at the streering system, and they said that the steering BOX needed to be replaced. They could not find anything wrong with the Pump or any other related device.

I should have the truck back by the end of this week or next Monday and hope that solves the problem.
