Got "challenged" by a Ranger...

Alright, I don't know what the deal is lately, but I've had all sorts of people try and race me. I've been driving alot more than normal I guess, so maybe that has something to do with it...

Anyways, I went driving after work out to a small town near where I live, just to kill some time, and had an interesting encounter with a younger guy in a Ford Ranger reg. cab. It was probably a 97' or 98' model, with a bunch of stickers in the back window (Stuff like "Aint skeerd", A Calvin peeing on a Chevy Bowtie etc, two small lights where the windshield washer nozzles are, and a huge bolt-on tip on the factory tailpipe (which sounded quite awful). Well, I had just pulled out of a gas station, and this guy pulls in behind me...

Riding on a two lane hwy back towards my house, he decided to pass me in the middle of a curve. (I'm going 60 in a 55 at this point) Oh well, I think, and slow down and let the goofball over in front of me. As soon as he gets back in the right lane, he slows down to about 35 or so... After about 1/2 a mile of following him, I pull out to pass and he punches it, without much effect though, as I still pull in front of him, and continue on my way at 60MPH again. Well, evidently that P-tard wasn't satisfied. On a pretty long straight shot, (probably 3/4 mile) he goes to pass me again, this time matching my speed when he gets right beside me, and starts honking his horn... I look over, and P-tard doesn't even look at me, he's just sitting there smiling some mokey-ass grin looking ahead.

At this point, I've gotten bored with the P-tard, and decide that I'll just let him screw around with someone else. At about 65, I "put the pedal to the metal" and was pretty pleased with the result. He downshifted and started about a second before me probably, but it didn't make a bit of difference. With my newly "tuned" PCM (Thanks Lyndon!) My truck didn't shift out of 2nd till about 85 or so. By that time, I was probably 40 yards ahead of P-tard, and pulling hard enough that I coasted past 100 with my foot off the gas at 95 or so. I guess this wasn't what the P-tard was looking for, as he turned into a gravel road and turned around shortly thereafter. Anyhow, it was pretty annoying but I still got a little chuckle out of it. I should have pulled him over and made him pay for gas I wasted. lol.

Don't act so surprised that everyone is "challenging" ... I saw that "please race me" sticker on your bumper yesterday. :cheers:

Lets just say I took him to the cleaners......big time, he thought just cuz he has dual exhaust and a hot shot attitude that he was really fast......lol :cheers:

This is some great stuff... :cheers: Mainly because I am a Ranger Owner. :D Although I have the 4.0 OHC with a bunch of power mods (FIPK, APTEN PERFORMANCE CHIP, Gibson Exhaust, MAF Mod) I would NEVER expect to beat an SS! From a Stoplight I would like ot see how my Ranger would do so I might play but I know I am going to loose :eek:

Over all Good Kill :seeya::eek:

Yeah, I used to own an 03' Mazda B4000 (Ranger's twin) with the 4.0L, 5 speed, Amsoil Filter, and Gibson Cat back... It was pretty quick, until I hit the 88mph limiter. I never did spring the $$$ for the Apten chip, had I kept it, I definitely would have. They're great trucks, this one just had a goof ball driver. :eek:

Here's a pic of my old one:

SWEET TRUCK... Yeah this Ranger of mine halls ass... I have really surprised a few people at a stoplight. :eek:

I will share a few pics that I have of my truck... BUT 1 THING... NO JOKE, These are the only pictures that I have of my truck. It just happens to be me pulling a Chevy 1500 off a lake in MN this winter! :cheers:

OK I better shut up before I get my butt kicked. :D

But first of all take a peek at my truck. Tell me what you think..

Now the angle doesn't do justice. Keep in mind how high a 1500 4x4 sits then look at the snow! :seeya: That stuff was about 10-14 inches and drifted BAD! My Ranger just had a wonderful weekend. :eek: I could go on and on about that weekend and how that little Ranger surprise me!

That would be a very interesting race.  Can I pick the track?

Jon

Sure, I don't care if its flat or mud with tires and logs in it, i'm always on the loud pedal and will do my best.

:thumbs: well with these as your Dyno results:

~ 5.7 Vortec ~

Flywheel = 255 HP @ 4600 RPM, 335 TQ @ 2800 RPM

If you dont' run from me.... I would turn around and hide!!! :lol:

Either way though it would be fun as heck to run them... Now I do have an option to swap out to a 4.0 OHC that is SuperCharged. Now I think that would be a closer race to your 5.7 V8 . :P

    • We live in a world where the average person expects more. People say wages and our needs are farther apart. My first new home had 3 bedrooms and one bedroom. My first car and truck had what would be considered a stripped or work vehicle. In my neighborhood back then there were more homes like that and cars too. Middle managers and second home buyers worked their way up to the fancy houses and cars. Car loans were 3 years. GM had different models of cars for different income levels. The cars were pretty much the same size if you wanted a big vehicle. The nameplate designated the opulence. Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac.  To be fair some of the cost is government mandated. We can’t blame them for giving us what people will pay for. Careful advertising steering people towards more profitable SUVs and trucks. As I learned recently a minivan is a cheaper more efficient form of transportation. Certainly easier to live with. Somebody realized the profit margin wasn’t as big and gave it a soccer mom label. So it lost its coolness. They’re making it the masses are buying it. You hit your hand with a hammer you can’t blame the hammer.
    • Hi All, I’m In need of advice regarding a scan result on my 2023 Silverado HD.  The Sensor Supply voltage relay states ON But…. the following 3 tests show Malfunction. Sensor supply voltage relay control circuit HIGH voltage Test status- Malfunction Sensor supply voltage relay control circuit LOW voltage Test status- Malfunction Sensor supply voltage relay control circuit OPEN test status - Malfunction. No DTC codes are stored. No DIC Lights. Remote Key Fob has been giving a few issues, namely Vehicle will not respond to an Open/Lock command from the key fob. New batteries installed to FOB made no difference, plus on one occasion recently the vehicle unlocked using the Fob, the vehicle started normally via the push button, then a random warning came up on the DIC stating the Remote Key was not found, all this while the key was located next to the central cup holders. Does anyone have any input or advice regarding this scenario? TIA
    • I agree, simplicity and reliability matter more as vehicles get more complicated. A V8 work truck option with fewer electronic features and a stronger warranty would definitely appeal to a lot of buyers who use their trucks for real work. Customizing it with trusted outfitters is often the best way to get exactly what you need
    • I’ve heard similar complaints from newer vehicles where the factory “premium” systems don’t always live up to expectations. A good installer should be able to improve the sound without turning it into a bass-heavy setup. I’d look into upgrading the front speakers, adding a quality DSP amplifier, and possibly improving sound deadening first—those changes usually make a much bigger difference than just adding a subwoofer. Hopefully someone local can recommend a reputable installer in the Las Vegas/St. George area.
