Well I've been tossing around the idea of getting an extended cab ZR2 truck for some time now, and I think the time is right.  The dealership that Jon (Chevy4x4Trucks) bought his GTP from has a 98 GMC Sonoma Highrider, a GMC ZR2, with only 29,800 miles on it.  I am headed up early tomorrow morning to test drive it.  Anything I should look out for?  They are asking 17,995 for it...their internet price is 15,688.  I want to get the best GM extended warranty that I can get, probably the one to 75,000 miles.  I am hoping to get it out the door for 16.5-17K if I decide to purchase.

Anyone got any advice?

O ya... I think I will probably sell my Blazer to one of my brothers.  It's a mint '95 as shown in my signature below... if anyone knows any one who might be interested I am looking for $700 cash and they can just take over the loan..it remains at $7924

Open the trap door on the front skid plate to inspect the oil filter bypass lines. They are notorious for leaking.

Also check fluid levels and color as well as grease in the front end.

Put it in and out of 4wd a few times while moving slowly.I checked one out for a guy last sunday and it got stuck in 4wd.The dealership is fixing the problem and he's working on a deal.

Most important, run a Carfax check on the VIN.

Unfortunatlly I have already encountered the notorious leaking oil lines on my Blazer.  I will check that and everything else you said.  Thanks Frank.  Have you had any problems with yours?  Also is the third door on the drivers side or passenger side?  Are the seats in back two jump seats that unfold from the sides like in the F*rd Ranger or is it a bench from the back wall like in the Dodge Dakota?

Thanks,

The 3rd door is on the drivers side.

Also you only have 1 jump seat in the back because they delete the one on the drivers side because of the 3rd door.

if you get the VIN, i can run it and get the complete service history on it for you!

Also, get them down below $15K!!

Mervz the VIN on that particular truck is 1GTCT19W3W8535772  It drove really nice.  It was a lease truck from Indiana.  I am thinking of offering $15,000 out the door, but I would be getting an extended warranty as well so I do not know yet what the final price should be.  Does 15K out the door sound good to you?  Any problems with your ZR2?  If you could also run these other two vins that would be great, I am considering these truck as I don't really want another red truck... I really want an Indigo blue one.

Blue -1GCCT19W2W8183168 They want $14,995 w/ 34K miles

Black- 1GCCT19W3X8173749 They want $16,995 w/ 33K miles

Thanks!

Joe, how did the test drive go saturday?  Sorry I didn't meet you down there I snoozed through the phone call, it was a late one on friday.

C'mon man, the suspense is killing me.

That truck looked pretty sweet though, I glanced at it while I was there and told Joe about it.  Now he can blame me if he forks over the $$$ for a different truck.

sure thing man. I'll run em when i get home today.

Negotiate the price before you even talk about the extended warrenty.  Get them down to about 15k, then when you get the price set, talk about the warrenty.  At this point they will try to make up lost money, so stick to your guns.

Thanks Mervz.  I'm now thinking of offering 14.5K for the truck and might not even get the warranty through them.  I can get a bumper to bumper exlusion warranty for 1400 online and its good for an additional 6 years & 100K miles.  I just found an Indigo Blue ZR2(what i really want) here in IL but I bet it will be sold tonight before I can even see it (wednesday)

Just to let you know! The dealer where I traded my ZR2 Blazer is wanting $17,900 for it and it is an 01 with 18000 miles. Just to give you something to go by when negotiating a price! I know you are looking at a truck, but I dont think there is a lot of difference between the truck and blazer sticker prices!

i got my ZR2 about 2 months ago. truck runs great. i had to put a 2" body lift on it when i put 32x11.50 tires on it. but it runs like a hoss otherwise. but i do have a small leak with those oil lines. what can i do to fix that?

I looked at an extended cad S-10 not long ago.  I asked around and found that there seems to be alot of trouble with the third door leaking.  Also the pressurized oil lines are prone to bursting and draining all your oil almost instantaneously.  This is common in the Blazer too, so I'm sure you already know about it.

God luck with it.  I hope it all works out for you and you get it.

    • Anyone have any info about backorder time? It's classic 4th of July hot here in ohio.
    • There would be one way of determining the quality of the factory oil although probably more than a typical oil lab test, and that would be to draw out some oil from a new truck and send a sample to a lab that could do a more elaborate test of the oil. The issue with too little oil in the diff may not be the lack of lubrication of the diff bearings and gears themselves ( although a lack of oil volume for cooling ) but the wheel bearings because at some point the oil would be too low to properly get onto the spinning axle or fed along the axle tube. That was the claim by the local dealer from a couple of trucks in recent years that had the wheel bearings fail and they figured from lack of sufficient oil due to a severe underfilled diff and some of the bearing material made its way to the diff and it got damaged as well so the axle housings were just replaced on warranty. But your right that if the diff is over filled by whatever margin that it causes more churning of the oil than is desirable and that is no good either and can cause a pinion seal to leak. Also old oil I believe can tend to loose some of its properties like antifoaming and another good reason to change the diff oil every so often.
    • I would be surprised if the diff's were not filled (with the cheapest gear lube) at the axle factory before being shipped to GM.  If you ever watched them building trucks they install the axles and all suspension parts with the frame upside down and then turn it over before its time to install the engine.     Too much gear lube in a axle can be worse than not enough especially with a lower quality GL where is get whipped up with entrained air (foam)  weakening its ability to lubricate.

    • Well....I've done my first intake gasket. Probably wrong, but...we'll see?   Ultra black on the china walls and 1/4" up onto the sides of the intake gaskets. Permatex High Tack (couldn't find Gaskachinch) on the head side of the intake gasket. I read wrong and it says you're supposed to put it on the mating surface of the head, not the gasket. Hoping it's like a PB&J sandwich where it doesn't matter what side the PB goes on so long as there's jelly. That crap is messy/sticky and I got a dab or two on the intake port openings, tried to wipe it off. Hopefully it won't be a big deal and will only aid in sealing.   Per instructions I left the intake (top side) of the gasket dry except for a light smear of RTV around the coolant ports. Wiggling the intake in there was a bear but I had help to free me of surrounding wiring/stuff but I was basically able to set it straight down lined up with the bolt holes.   I did not think to wait until the RTV skinned over but there probably was 5-10 minutes while it sat before installing the intake.   Bolts finger tight first. Then, followed the Chilton's manual pattern to snug them to 15 lb-ft.   Waited a little over an hour, and then did the final torque in sequence again to 35 lb-ft.   Yesterday I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and got my new "nut and bolt kit" (fuel lines) installed. Damn GM used security torx on the spider, which I don't have, so I got scammed at the local HW store for an off-brand security Torx bit set.   The new driver's door mirror arrived yesterday, so, there's a chance this thing could be running and road legal tomorrow? I don't want to get my hopes up.   This will be my first time stabbing a distributor, too. Although, lucky me, someone else marked the old distributor for removal previously, I did see that. (Someone's been here before!!). Engine is still at TDC so it *should* be just a matter of transferring the mark to the new dizzy and rotating it into place.
