Should I sell or should I keep?

I am expecting the obvious answer on this one but if you guys could help out the newbie I would GREATLY appreciate it... :flag: So here is the story, I bought an '01 GMC 2500HD 6.0L 4x4 ex cab short box. The reason I bought it is because we go to the sand dunes alot and I needed a bigger truck to tow our new '22 Weekend Warrior. The truck has a 6" Tuff Country lift and 35" mud terrains on weld scorpio wheels on it with the 4.10's in the rear-end. Long story short it doesnt have ANY power whatsoever and I have to tow the entire time in 3rd gear turning between 3k and 5k depending on the grade of the highway. My question is this...... will the wester's and FIPK and flowmasters and POSSIBLY 4.56's be enough to make this truck a keeper? Or should I just say fug it and go buy a diesel? Please bear in mind current gas prices ;) and things of that nature.... oh and what sort of MPG do you guys reckon with the shorter gears and without and things like that..... I am not asking too much for my first post am I? hehe here is a pic to make up for it.....

Hey Edgerat,

I just sold a 2002 k2500 with a 6.0 3.73...Great truck, strong engine, but all the power was way too high in the rpm band. I only tow about a 6500 lb load (master craft) thats fairly aerodynamic and any sort of hill I had to run the 6.0 at 3500-4000 rpms to maintain any speed. Granted at 4k in 2nd I was running 65-70 on some pretty sizeable hills.....I just dont like runnin the piss out out of that thing like that although it never once complained or used any oil in 25k.

I just replaced it with a 2004 k2500 sub with 8.1 and 4.10...say goodbye to high rpm towing!

Good luck,

Doug

Don't know about mileage, but with a Westers/Nelson/PCMforless tune, a FIPK, and 4:56s your power would be right back in the sweet spot.

The gears are really the biggie in your case. with those 35s, your ratio dropped waaaay down.

Gears alone will dramatically help you!!! You install gears with a custom tune and you will have no problem at all doing your townig.

BTW....NICE TRUCK and Welcome!

yeah sorry about that BIG pic..... I plum forgot that I had the digi cam set on BEST quality..... thanx for the tips guys I will be getting in touch with Wester's real soon about getting started on this road. Any thoughts on what the mileage will be with the mods I talked about including gears?

Its is not uncommon for us to gain 1-3 mpg after gears. This is due to the engine being able to work more efficently. The Westers will also help out milage. IF you can keep your foot out of the loud pedal! :flag:

    • Are you going to take long trips in it?  If so, try out the seats in the various trims. For me the lower trim level seats were not comfortable.
    • I have a 2016 that I bought new and still own. I'm around 129,000 miles now. The biggest problem was a transmission failure about 2 years ago around 95000 miles. No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.
    • I’ve own several successful businesses. I’ve bought homes and lived in different states. I’d witness several generations buy homes and survive in different economic circumstances. You get awful sippy when people have different experiences than you do. You live a life. I’ve lived a life. It seems our experience has been different. You can point out generalized statistics. Some people learn how to thrive when the odds are against them. Living in different states does make a difference in a persons quality of life and economic outcomes and opportunities. That’s a fact Jack. It’s my truth, my life. Hard work and long hours the right environment made my families life easier. And yes moving to a different state increased the odds of that happening. Stats are generalized. People who thrive don’t make excuses. They beat the odds. Others get mad and point to those statistics. I guess that’s you. My post pointed out how you helped people beat the odds. Somehow your panties got in a wad. Go figure.
    • Good question, I don't remember for sure but I believe it was the HD. I will check and get back to you.
    • Point of the post sir was that while both wages and cost are rising EVERYWHERE; the cost is rising faster EVERYWHERE than the ability to buy EVERYWHERE. We're not going down the location rabbit hole. I'm aware of what economic migration is. I've lived in four states including Texas.   It's what "Purchasing Power" means.   I'm not telling you what I think. Your not entitled to your own facts. If you and I were, they wouldn't be facts.    fact /făkt/   noun Knowledge or information based on real occurrences.
