Quick question on brake shoes??...

I called the autoparts store today for a price on rear brake shoes for my 97 S-10 Blazer 4WD.  They said there are two sizes for that model.  9 1/2 x 2 and 11 x 2.  Does anyone know which it is?  I've looked through my Haynes guide for a any specs and couldn't find any.

I think if it came with a towing package, it would have the bigger of the two, and normally the smaller ones are on the 2wd models. Only way to know for sure is to pull off a drum and measure it from the inside, or look on the drum for the measurement. It will probably be in milimeters if you can read it, so convert that to inches. (the maximum diameter it can be cut to on a lathe is stamped on the outside edge) so you may be able to see the number just by looking at either of the drums through the wheel with the wheels on.

If you still aren't sure, and you are doing the brakes yourself, you can always just get both sets, match them up, and bring back the ones you didn't need. :sideways:

Cool, that makes sense.  I've got the factory tow package on my truck so maybe I will just go w/ the larger brakes (got a 50/50 chance right, hehe).

I'll also try to take a peek at the drums before I pull the wheel off.  Heck, maybe I'll just go pull a wheel real quick.

It ended up being the 9 1/2 x 2's.  I got the larger ones first and had to return them (doh!).

Oh well.  Now I know.  I don't have any clue why their silly system showed two sizes??

On another note; the Haynes guide says to replace your shoes when the they are worn within 1/8 of the rivet heads.  Well, the new shoes aren't even that deep, what gives?  I think I'm gonna hold off on my brake job, because my pads look good.  What's the general rule on brake shoes?  When is the best time to change them?

actually, minimum thickness on most pads or shoes are .030 inch above the rivet, according to most factory specs, and our book at my work,  and if the haynes manual says 1/8 inch, then thats .125, which means theirs still plenty of material left.
