I have a transmission in a 4x4 Chevy that will not upshift. It is fine in first and reverse. I can start and move the vehicle, but I cannot drive it down the road. Any suggestions cheaper than replacing the trans would be greatly appreciated. The original 700R4 trans was replaced with a 94 or 95 L460E. It might be a L480E. It has 5 gears

Welcome to the Forum :puke:

1st thing to do is make sure what tranny you have..they didnt have the 4L60E in '89 ,4L60 maybe, but not the "E"....then you could try and change the filter and fluid, checking for large deposits in the pan...You can also check that the vacuum line to the modulater is hooked up and the modulater isnt leaking oil in2 the vacuum line....Thats just a place to start...

No 4L60 either. It was a 700R4.

I must have been 1/2 asleep...thats Y it would'nt be shifting..the '89 ECM wouldnt have the wiring or programming to tell the 4L60E or the 4L80E to SHIFT :troll:

I drove this vehicle for a year before the problem started so it cannot be the ECM

OK then...it may be possible that you have no power to the solonoids in the valve body..a 4L60E uses the A and B solonoids to control shifts..they r triggered(grounded) by the ECM via internal quad drivers...if there is no power(+12v) to the "E" terminal of th transmission case connector..this could be your problem...

check your fuses...Just a guess

Will it shift to 2nd and 3rd manually? the manual valve should override the shift control solonoids(A & B)...if so,there may not be +12v to the tranny as I stated above...If it does not shift manually,it may be a sticking valve in the valve body

I will check the voltage. It will not shift manually. Thanks for all the suggestions
