4L60E shift delay

Hello all. I have a 94 Z71, I recently had trans fluid leaking from the trans vent tube, It was not over filled I figured I might have water in the fluid; flushed it, the fluid did not look like a milk shake, it was black and smelled burnt. Now I kinda felt like it was shifting kinda late from 1st to 2nd. Hooked up my scanner, no trouble codes, the only thing that it said was 1-2 shift error(sec)7.91, but no trouble codes. any advise what to do, i have been quoted 1900.00 for a rebuild, anyone have any ideas before I spend a crap load of money? thank you

When it comes out of the vent tube like that it is because you cooked the tranny. After you get it rebuilt, do install a aux cooler. I am not saying that yours is the case but so many people put big tires on wrong gear ratios and have short tranny life then blame tranny for being defective in design. Big tires add a lot of extra load to to tranny which means more heat too.

Yes, when the fluid is burnt like that, so are your clutches in the tranny. It will fail you soon! Look into a good performance tranny from B&M or many others. It will probably end up costing you less than that rebuild, and you will have a much better and stronger tranny. Or get a tranny from the boneyard, the cheapest option. Just check out the fluid in it to make sure it isn't burnt, or new! The way to test fluid is to taste it, I'm not kidding. Just touch a drop of fluid to your tongue, if it is burnt, even slightly you will taste it. Even if someone has changed the fluid to mask problems you will still be able to smell and taste the burntness. That's an OLD trick, but still works!

I would go the boneyard route but no need to taste it though and if fluid is brownish or has a burnt peanut butter smell to it, stay away from it. I should have that kinda "sweet" dextron smell to it. Do add a aux cooler though no matter what you do to avoid this in the future.
