Exhaust?

Here's the situation. I just bought my '01 2500HD 8.1L a couple weeks ago and while sitting on the ground installing some mudflaps, I noticed that the tailpipe has been bent forward to a point that it is kinked really bad at the bend just behind the axle. Now, I suppose I could just have a new tailpipe put on, but I also could use this as an excuse (Gee honey, the muffler was ruined too!) to put a better flowing muffler on it too. What do you all suggest as a good muffler for better performance and better flow, but not too loud? Or doesn't the 8.1L respond well to exhaust changes?

8.1's respond well to better flow. Flow master makes a dual in with a single 3.5 inch out that would play nicely on that truck.

If your looking for a "quiet" aftermarket muffler go Magnaflow...I've got the Flowmaster and its loud around town, settles down on the highway, but you definetly know its there.

I have a Gibson 2 in, 2 3.5 inch out cat back system on my 2001 6.0 Liter and it is really loud, too loud actually at anytime. I don't think Gibson makes anything but 2 in and 2 out for HD's so just so you know.

Well, HendyPhoto has the Flowmaster on his 8.1, he seems to love it. I'm still waiting on his sound clip/video... hehe

I havem't heard many 8.1's w/ exhaust, but I'd reccomend either a 50 Big Block or 70 series Flowmaster for Flows. Spin Tech seems to have hgad great reults w/ the Truck/RV muffler on the 8.1 trucks equipped w/ them. I'd reccomend this moreover than the Flows, since Spin Tech's have a lower level of interior resonance.

Seriously consider Magnaflows two in two out, it idles very quiet and is semi-loud under full throttle. It gets louder after awhile, my took about 6 mo and then leveled off and stayed there. I like it because it has a very low rumble, not loud.

With a 8.1 not too likely. Flow master makes a muffler with a 3.5 inch single outlet (two inlets) for sure and I believe a 4" one too

I have the big block 70 series on my 5.3 and it is quiet. You can hear some exhaust note but not that bad. You can always give Flowmaster a call and ask them what they would recommend.

The Magnaflows fit better than the Flowmaster and you don't lose clearence. The FM sits Horizontally and the two in two out uses a lot less room. Looks like they belong there instead of an after thought or backwoods setup.
