1500 or 1500HD?

My sister and her husband decided that they're going to trade their Exterra for either a 1500 Z71 or if they can get a good deal, a 1500HD. The crew cab would be nice, since she's got a 1.5 yr old and is planning on having another within the next yr yr and a half. Although, the 1500 Ext. will work fine too...

Which would you get Like how much more room is there in the HD than a reg. 1500 Ext. cab? I think it'd be sick if they bought the HD and did like a 4" lift, but who knows...All I know is I already get to choose her exhaust

The 1500HD crew cab is nice but it will ride a bit stiffer. The 1500HD is really a 3/4 marked as a 1/2 to get 6.0 engine and for people that would never buy a 3/4 otherwise and it has a 8600 GVW which it not a 1/2 ton by any strech of the imagination. That aside, it will be loger and tuffer to park than a ext cab with like bed lengths and may not fit is some garages because of length. It will also use a bit more gas than a regular 1/2 ton too.

The 1500HD is a foot longer than the 1500 and all of that is in the back seat as far as I know. The CC has doors that can be opened from the outside which is a major concern with children strapped in the back. Child seats will fit in the back of a CC but I am not sure if that is true of a 1500 or not. The CC will make it a lot easier to get the children in and out of car seats in the back.

 

The 1500HD is considerably stiffer in the ride department. It is also longer and therefore harder to park and to navigate around in tight spaces. The 1500HD is quite a bit heavier and that and the 6.0 and 4L80E transmission make it less efficient in the mileage deparment. Mileage will be 12.5 to 14.5 on average with 15.5 to 16.5 on the interstate at 70mph.

 

Either way it will be a Chevrolet

She don't care about mileage or ride or parking. Hell, she loves driving our crew cab since it makes her "feel big"

She's only 4'11, her husband is 6'4, BIG difference. That's the only thing she was concerned about is leg room. I guess there's not really any difference at all between the room in the back Exterra vs. Ext. cab, but she said the Crew would really be nice. Her husband could use it wise too, since he's in the sheet metal business. His boss actually just bought an 04 GMC Dmax Crew Cab, I think I heard something that he might buy a Ford diesel for Nate to use for his new work truck.

 

She's not wirried about parking the truck in the garage, her husbands Jetta *cough cough trying to make it fast * so she's not worried about that. Parking she doesn't mind.

As for the doors opening, don't they have child safety locks on the newer Crew Cabs??? You'd think they would w/ all the yuppies buying them

She's going to go look around at local dealers this weekend, try to get a good deal. The place where they bought the Exterra is owned by the same guy that owns the Chevy dealer down a couple dealers (I think), and they gave them a hell of a deal on the X, so maybe they can work something out at the Chevy place. My

cousin's a manager at the GMC dealer here and town and "claims" he'll give her a good deal, but she can easily get a better one anywhere else.

Why don't they just get a 1500 Crew Cab and get the best of both worlds. It's still a half ton and don't have the extra weight of the HD.

As much as I hate to say it, Ford makes a very nice crew cab on 3/4 and 1 ton truck though their extended cab is lacking. If I were in the market for a crew cab I would have to consider it anyway. I have driven a few of them and Ford has done a nice job with them I hatte to say. I would not be caught dead in a Dodge one though.

It is only a half ton in name sake and nothing more (GM trickery) as no true 1/2 ton truck has a 8600GVW and it is about 1500 lbs less than that on the average with true 1/2 tons. GM bumped the GVW to get 6.0 in it for emmisions and called it a HD.

GM did not make the 1500HD for 2004. Instead they make a 1500 CC which is built on the 1500 ext cab frame and has a sort box to compensate for the longer cab. It is not available with the 6.0 or any of the HD components. If you want a 1500HD equivalent you have to get a 2500 non HD model.

She thought about Ford, although She would prefer the 5.3 or 6.0 V8 over Ford's V10 or 5.4. And she doesn't want a diesel, so that's out of the market. The Ford Su[erCrew is just plain ugly ass ugly and the Dodge just is Dodge, so yeah...

Well, she's going to try to look at a 1500 Ext. cab short box today. It's an 04, 5.3 ltr w/ 3:73 rear, LS w/ all the options but leather and a 6 disk changer. Price shows $18,??? and she said the Exterra's a 6 yr loan and if she goes to a 5 yr loan if they get the truck, it'll still be $100 cheaper a month!

A extended cab witha 5.3 and 3.73 will have uninspiring performace. Especailly if you go up a few tires sizes. The few Ford V10's I have driven were strong performers and it appears to be a sturdy engine too as they are in a lot of motor home chassis.
