K&N vs AEM

Ive searched and read all the treads on intakes, but I still have to ask the question....again! As if this question hasnt gone around enough!!

 

Im trying to decide between 2 intakes, K&N FIPK Gen-II or AEM Brute Force.

 

The K&N is $214 and the AEM is $240. Is the AEM worth the extra money? I was totally set on the AEM until I saw the price on the K&N, now I cant make up my d@amn mind!! :puke:

 

Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!

volant :puke: , but i dont know about the other systems, i just like the volant because its enclosed and your filter wont get dirty as fast and the volant flows the same amount of air as k and n and aem, just cold air because it takes it from outside the engine compartment instead of making a seperate box inside the engine compartment, btw tbyrne has a group buy for i think 230 bucks for the volant, but between the 2 id go with k and n just because some friends got their systems and have had good results :puke:

Go aem! Horsepower t/v actually did a special and it picked up 12 hp at the tires. Nobody else can make that claim. I've seen the K&N as well and do not like the set up as much as aem. For one, almost every K&N I've seen the tube actually rubs the fan shroud. I did not have this problem with the aem.

I recommend the Volant as well for the same reasons.

I third the VOLANT for the same reasons :D

I would go with the volant with the ram tube or the vararam King Cobra Ram air system spend the extra bucks and get the extra power. If not, go with the K&N.

I have seen the volant, AEM, and K&N on trucks and I have to say that the AEM and Volant are the best systems. K&N just doesn't filter the dirt that AEM and Volant does. The cold air box is nice but for the moeny, AEM is the best deal b/c you can remove the skirts and have ram air through the headlights and the AEM tube is 4" round with flows a lot of air.

im using a k&n intake and it works great. it filters as much air as any other intake and is k&n which make the filter. i didnt like the aem since the tube is metal and gets very hot. i do like the volant.

I have had all three over time and different model trucks. Volant did not pull enough air in my opinion and did not fit well on a Ford, IMO just replacing one box for another. K&N was OK. Have a AEM now on my 6.0 and it fit better than any intake I have ever done and looks great.

 

Currently running the AEM Brute Force with dual 18 inch Magnaflows and the engine tunes by Diablo Predator. My mileage went from 13mph to 16mph. This is the first time in all my years of modifying trucks this has happened. This is on my 2004 2500 HD w/6.0, 4x4, w/4:10 gears. Running 6 inch Superlift, 35 inch pro comp mud terrains w/eagle alloys. Good luck!

The AEM uses a K&N filter.....

 

I have an AEM on my 4.8 and couldn't be happier. Fit and finish is excellent and it definitely helps with mileage and performance. Only drawback is that at some RPM's, when I'm opening the throttle up it whistles a little, but not for long. I can live with that though. I think most open element systems do this.

Look I dont know if anybody else agrees with me, but wht AEM on our trucks. We are american V8's (most of us) so why put an intake that is know for making import intakes,what is next Greddy Exhaust. Glad I got that monkey of my back. Feel free to tear me apart with your opinions

I love my K&N, been on for almost 3 years. I read an article somewhere(Fourwheeler or something like that) where they tested a bunch of intakes and they were all pretty comparable. The K&N made the most power of the bunch, like 1 or 2 hp more if I remember correctly. I remember that Volant and AEM were among the ones tested. I'll try and see if I can find the magazine to get more info.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
