Rattle in Door

I have had a rattle in my driver's side door for the last couple of months and finally got around to taking it all apart last night... well, it turns out to be the latch that prevents the door from swinging too far open. It appears that when the door is closed, this latch pretty much can bounce up and down as it pleases. It looks as though there might have been a grommet on there at some point that has now disintegrated.

Anyone else ever have this happen or have any suggestions on how I might fix this? I hate rattles!!!!!

Yes, I had the same problem,GM has come out with a new door check link (that what the part is called) that they started to put into production sometime in the '01 model year.

Just go to your favorite GM dealer and ask for part number 15173407 they list for $27.49, You will see that the new part is much more heavier-duty, I suggest you change both sides because the other one will do the same thing sooner or later,

and their not hard to change at all since you already have had the door panel off.

Hope this helps.

I think what you are talking about is the door check link. When you open your door, do you still have the 3 detent positions that the door will stop in or does it just freely swing all the way opened and closed? The checklinks in the full sized pickups are known to break the "C" shaped torsion spring that forces the rollers against the checklink arm. The broken spring is probably what is giving you the rattle. If so, the only way to cure it is to replace the checklink. There is one bolt on the body end and 2 nuts on the door end. The checklink comes out through the door so you will have to take the door trim off to replace it. I do durability testing of these things every day and they are not a very good design.

Thanks for the replies guys! I was thinking I would have to deal with this forever... if I can fix this one I would have one rattle down and like 3 or 4 more to go!
