Messy Oil Drain

Recommended Posts

Last time I changed the oil it was a total mess. Oil hit the exhaust, went everywhere, then hit the skid plates, went all towards the front of the truck and ALL over the ground Worst oil change I have ever done, and I've done a billion.

I saw the Fram Sure drain. I got one for free from a friend but am iffy about the design, and especially with the name Fram on it...

I came across this:

Now this looks interesting.

I was also just thinking of welding up a small pan that can hold about 2 gallons of oil and build a small hanger of some sort to hang it on the exhaust, and skid plated, then put a hole in the bottom of the pan, run a hose to a drain pan.

Lots of work but the drain plug thing looks like it would work.

I've got the Fumoto drain valve on mine and it works terrific. I highly recommend it as mine also has the skid plate package so that when you down to the very last of the oil, it drains on the top of the skidplate and out numerous holed in in the plate.

With the Fumoto, I attach a hose to it (it's the nipple style Fumoto), and turn the lever...it drains right into my oil pan with no mess. Very good product.

what about the OEM oil drain plug that has the magnet on it where it catches any "fuzzies" floating around in the oil?

Is there any way you can get a pic of it?

(Just HAD to ask that question didnt I?)

With the Fumoto, oil changes are a breeze so there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to do them on a regular basis thus eliminating any concern about "fuzzies" or metal particles building up in your engine oil. Perform routine analysis on your oil and those fuzzies will be the least of your worry as you'd be amazed at the contaminents that build up in your engine that don't stick to that magnet.

Why dont you guys give the gm designers a break. This the 1 st truck they ever built. Im shure they will have this problem figured out in 3003 or so.:):):flag::thumbs:

I've got the Fram SureDrain on my truck. The only problem I had with it was that the hose wouldn't stay on. I solved that by hose clamping it on.

I had concerns about the length of the Fumoto valve and it being susceptible to getting knocked off during four-wheeling. You don't have to worry about that with the SureDrain.

I have the Fram Sure Drain on my truck as well. It is a well constructed little valve-I opened up the package in Wally World (they already think I am crazy there in the automotive dept) and gave it a good once over and was pleased with its design and construction-so I took it home and installed it. Works good! It is the only Fram product that will ever touch my baby though!

I was thinking that the fumoto valve would hang down too much with 4x4'ing

Welp since I've got a freebie sure drain I'll try that one first.

There is no problem opening or closing the Fumoto hot. Very smooth opening and closing and the valve lever has a latching position where it is held in place by a spring to prevent opening accidentally.

It's not real big, but just big enough to get your thumb under it to turn it. It gets warm obviously, so if you wish to wear gloves than do so. The last time I changed the truck was pretty warm, but I flipped it open without a glove...very quickly though!
