Fuel Gauge

Came across this forum while researching my latest purchase, a 03 2500HD 8.1/allison 4X4 LS crew cab LB. w/9000 miles for $24000.......Didnt really need it couldn't pass it up.

I am selling my 83 K20 which I consider a real truck(rough ride, vinyl floor mat & seat etc.....I think I'll miss it) Anyhow here is my question, I am checking the fuel mileage on the 03 and am getting a little nervous, can someone tell me how the fuel guage reacts on these trucks, do they drop fast at first and they seem to slow or slowly drop and then plunge like my 83? (83 got 8mpg, hoping for 10-12 on 03)

I have always been a GM guy and I like this truck but have found some issues that I don't think could be happening to a truck that stickers @ $40,000.00 w/ 9000 mi.

Rust inner tailgate bottom lip

Squeaky belt

Aluminum wheels corroding

One more thing, on start up in the morning the transmission makes a noise for about 20 seconds that would pass for a diesel engine. Is this normal?

Maybe I expect to much???

I don't know about the 03 but the gauge in my 90 go through the first half of the tank like a yokozuna at an all you can eat buffet. the bottom half goes more like a turtle slow and steady. so that sounds normal to me but... I could be wrong  your best bet would be to check the factory mileage ratings and compare that to your actual fuel economy. If there's a huge difference then the red flag should go up

TimTim,

When my truck was new, it acted the same way. I Ran out of gas one day on a trip while towing with the guage still showing 1/4 tank and the trip computer showing 40 miles of range.

Once at home, the dealer told me that the computer card that was installed at the factory was the incorrect part number. As such, my guage was not calibrated properly.

They replaced the card and all has been well since. And yes, I HAVE tested it.

My truck also growls at start-up especially on a cold morning when it's been sitting outside. The Alli makes some unusual noises. You'll get used to it.

As for the other issues...sounds like warranty.
