Mag-Hytec Differential Cover

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of installing a mag-hytec differential cover on my truck, but I'm not sur if it's worth the cost.  It's supposedly supposed to hold more oil, keep the rear end cooler, and have more magnets to catch particles.  Has anyone installed this on their truck?

they say it's about double the capacity.  I didn't see any claims on how effective it is on reducing temperature? Say you ran  at x rpm  for x amount of time, you should be able to say that it reduces the temp by x amount right?  I know this may not be under load, but would it still be a meaningful?

i didnt see any numbers either, but if im correct, there should be a semi easy way to figure out how much temp it reduces it.

Any amount of xtra fluid that it holds will lower the temp some, due to more fuild absorbing more heat.

I dont know how good the small fins work at reducing temp, they look awefully small and insignificant.

How much heavy towing, if any do you guys do?   Frequent, heavy towing conditions is about the only place this diff cover is of any benefit.  And even then I'm not sure it is really necessary unless you are sure your rear end is over heating.  I've seen full floating 14 bolts last damn near forever under the roughest conditions, and they never needed one of these covers.

And honestly, if you tow enough to need one of these, a heavier weight synthetic fluid can take care of most of the heat problems.  Other then that, its for looks only if you ask me....

I disagree, i think having larger gears and/or larger tires will also play a role in either the new tranny pan, diff cover, or both.

Don't forget the coolness factor. Having a dipstick for your rear end just sounds cool and looks great too.  :(

Well, there is a reason I didn't mention that.  All but two of the people in this thread are running the 10 bolt rear axle.  This axle is very weak, and thats about all there is to it.  The axle itself will break from lack of strength long before overheating has a chance to damage it.

So you guys other then gandolphxx and tinman (on his 2500) are spending money trying to polish a turd if you buy this cover.
