Anyone go with an aftermarket Intake?

I'm looking to get some more power outta this 5.3. Anyone have luck with the aftermarket air intakes? How about bigger throttlebodies and spacers? Anything would be appreciated...Btw, how did GM get "315" outta the 04's?

I had a K&N FIPK on my 01 Silverado. Worked very well, took about 2 hours to install (taking my time), added a few horses. Best part was the nice sound when you stepped into it. Add a quality aftermarket exhaust (I went with a Gibson cat back) and you have a good balance.

I've had a K&N GenII FIPK on my truck for over three years and am very happy with it. I originally installed it a day or two before I installed the exhaust, and I felt a power increase instantly. Nice fitment too, just had to trim the fan shroud back a little bit....

I don't want to hijack the thread, but does anyone know the difference between GENII and GENIII? :lurk:

04's have 295 hp I have a UPD (NSV) intake, it has a noticeable gain over the FIPK I had.

I picked up the volant air intake. It actually replaces the stock airbox with another box. I like it very much. Added power and slight increase in mpg. It also has the option(purchase separately) for a cold ram air intake extension that draws air from the front lower fascia. That could add abit more power due to the true cold air.

Most others (I think all) aftermarket intakes get rid of the box all together. I dont personally like that because you have a higher chance at sucking in hotter air from the engine compartment.

Overall I am happy with the volant. Easy installation about 45min.-1hr. Second time would be about 20min.

I have an AEM Brute Force Intake that I bought new off Ebay. It was easy to install, makes a great sound, and picked up a noticeable difference in horsepower. Definitely get a good aftermarket intake. Along with my Magnaflow catback, the truck really moves down the road quite nicely.

I have an FIPK Gen. II with a drycharger (pre-filter) and it's been doing great for about 20K miles.

I added the FIPK, Magnaflow dual outlet and Wester's tune all about the same time... It's so much better than it was stock, I can hardly describe it. :fume:

I believe the major differences among the 5.3s from the debut to 04 are pretty subtle. I'm almost postitive that compression ratio is a little higher no the new ones, and there are probably some changes in the intake manifold to make for better power.

Heads. You'd be absolutly amazed how much porting and polishing inside the ports and what not can effect power. This is obviously something that the average joe can't do himself. I saw Horsepower TV a few months back where did just this on a basic LS1 head and then bench tested the head. The flow rate was increased by like 85%. I believe they also used a drimmel to round out the inside of the intake ports.

Moral of the story. If you got cash to burn and want more power without major internal changes, thats what I'd do.

AFAIK GENIII was the entirely new small block design, not one thing carried over from the GENII that was created back in the mid-1950's and lasted over 40yrs... Now there is already a GENIV coming soooon
