Are there subs that you dont need a box for?

Seems like back when I tried to keep up with this stff, they had subs that were coming out that didnt need enclosures. No clue how well they worked or if they are even still around.

 

There is a nice area in the right rear of a trailblazer that a small 8 inch sub might fit without too much cutting...

 

 

just considering options.

They were known as free-air subs. You dont see much of them anymore, or most subs are not listed as being a free-air sub. I believe that Image Dynamics IDMAX series subs can actually be used in a free-air application.
