I have a 2500hd 8.1 cc Just wondering at what point (tow/haul weight) do you guys use your tow/haul and do you tow in tow/haul mode in od or od off. Thanks Knez

I personally will use tow/haul mode anytime my trailer is hooked up to my truck as I don't want any undo stress on the drivetrain.

as for OD, I will use t/h mode until I get to cruising speed and then turn it off... granted, in my case all the roads to all the tracks around here are flat, I wouldn't do this if it was hilly.

just my $.02

The only thing I tow is my race trailer (~7K lbs.), so I always use Tow/haul mode. I'll also use it unloaded when I am going through the mountains. The tranny downshifts sooner on the decline so I don't have to ride the brakes down.

Same here as c5HD - I use T/H whenever I tow my race car. I also have a little 14ft Jon boat that I use for duck hunting. Most times I dont use T/H with that - cause I cant even feel it back there....but If I am driving through hilly areas with it I will throw it in T/H.

I dont think there is anything wrong with using it anytime you want or if you are unsure - use it - cant hurt anything.

Tow haul with the Allison is different than most trannys. It moves the shift points up 500 rpm and then locks the torque converter in all gears xcept 1st. The locking of the toque converter lowers the temps in the tranny. If you pay really close attention to the shifts you can feel it locking the convertor in between the shifts. It should be used anytime you haul past 50% of the load capacity. It also increases the downshift effectiveness when the truck senses a load when slowing also know as grade braking.

I use it whenever I tow my 8,300lbs trailer. I do not disable 4th. From habit of towing with my 93 Suburban, I am so tempted to just reach the gear shifter and change it myself. But it does quite well by itself. The three most noticeable things are nice engine braking at stop-lights, holdnig gears longer and the incredible lock-down in up-hilll climbs at 1,500rpms, with trailer behind.
