motor ticks during acceleration

does anyone know what the ticking noise is that comes from under the hood on a 2002 trailblazer it sounds like its on the right side but its not the manifold i was told maybe it was the timing/idle module on the front top of motor because there is a little bit of oil coming from the plug does anyone else have this problem or has any one else heard of it
