Air Injection

i was reading on another board about the air injection tubes on the new Silverados with the Vortech engines.  someone said they didnt have them on their truck.  i couldnt find any on mine either.  all i know is that these inject air into the intake manifolds.  the guy was talking about removing them to increase performance, but it seems to me that it would hurt performance.  does anyone know what the purpose of these are and whether its good to have them or not? thanks
