Buddy has a question, has a 1999 silverado, ticks at start up for about 30 sec. Dealer telling him its normal, no harm to motor??? My 94 sierra has no such "tick" Any feedback would be appreciated

More than likely experiencing piston slap, it's very common. Sounds like Markeaux had a lifter concern since switching to thicker oil solved his problem. Your friend could try doing what Markeaux did and see if it helps...if not I wouldn't be too concerned, all of the GenIII style engines seem to makes ticking and tapping noises whether it be under cold operation or throughout the drive cycle.

You may also be hearing the effects of carbon buildup. Try running a good fuel system cleaner through the tank and see if the knock stops or slows down. A lot of times the carbon build up is mistaken for the piston slap as the noise is very similar.

I used to have one of the early ZZ motors, and it had the worst piston slap that I ever heard...sounded almost like a rod knock when cold. Many GM performance engines utilize a "centered" wrist pin design that allows the pistons to rock until warmed up. Drove me nuts, even when I found out that it was "characteristic".

I read somehwere that the ticking sound was the reason gm went to the composite valve covers. I just ordered a set so Ill let you know how that works out.

I decided to try Markeaux's recommendation and switched to Mobil1 5w-40 Truck and SUV formula this weekend. Didn't want to go to a 10w-x with winter coming. While my piston slap is still there, there was another tick, that I think might have been a lifter, which seems to have disappeared or at least quieted up enough that I don't hear it now. Been noticing it ever since my cam and spring install, since I've been listening very closely. May have always been there or may be a by-product of the stiffer springs affect on the pushrods/lifters.

 

Curious to see how those composite valve covers work out...I wonder if they do anything or just help to mask some of the noises. Very interesting.

I use Mobile1 10W30 year round and we get temps as low as -30F in winter. Always starts and no funny noises except for the Alternator which is normal even on brand new vehicles. Noise goes away after 10secs.
