We are changing the Fluid and filter on my sis' bf's 03 Z71 and we are having a hard time getting out the gasket that goes where the filter goes in. Any suggestions? This is making me very irritated!!!

I've used a small screwdriver and a small hammer and hit the seal on the edge to collapse it kinda like a beer can, but be carefull not to mar the tranny case....

I've also used a cotter pin pulling tool, it has a hook in the end of it, however most people do not have one of those....hope this helps, good luck

Yea, that gasket/o-ring is a beotch! I used a puller with a hook on the end...the kind that you use on a pilot bearing. It was kicking my butt so bad that I called my buddy at the dealership and he told me that the techs don't replace those unless they're torn or in real bad shape....Think I'll try the re-use method next time myself.

I use a dental tool like thingamajigger...Only thicker.

I don't think you'll find me leaving the old one in place...Ever.

And Budhayes3...If my buddy told me that he did that, and he was a tech, he wouldn't be touching my truck again. Half the point of them being techs and becoming certified, is so they don't skip little things like that. (Of course, that's my opinion, and nothing personal against your buddy.)

No prob Wingnut. Actually my buddy is a service writer, and I had him ask his techs...I do all of the work myself, except for wheel balances and alignments. Unfortunately, that's what goes on at dealerships and repair facilities, especially with the flat rate system that most techs are paid on.

They aren't the techs that work on lisak421's truck are they? :banghead:

I can get it out in about 13 seconds flat with a $2 tool after 12 beers. They really have no excuse for that type stuff.

We need a "poke a service tech in the eye" smiley.

There is a 'seal' 'bushing' puller that looks like a tap for 3/8" pipe that screws up into the seal and then to a slide hammer puller. That way, you don't scratch/bum-up the seal seat.

FWIW, if it doesn't come out with the old filter, don't replace it! It's not gonna fall out once you get the filter shoved up into it.

The real reason they give you a new one is because the pre '96 4L60E/700R4 trannys used a different size filter neck. The late filter will only fit the early tranny by using the new seal.

Maybe it's just me, but if it doesn't come out with the old filter...I'm still going after it.

I'm no mechanical genius but based on my experience, if you leave something like that in there once, it's going to be really hard to get it out later...You know, when it wears out enough to not be able to even hold a new filter in.

Just another .02 from .02.

I was never able to remove the pan because I could not get to the torx bolts holding the transmission cable bracket next tothe pan... :tear:

I did replace the transmission pan plug after I stripped the one that came with the truck...
