First of all do you have any codes? Secondly throw the Chilton out and get the real service manual that is correct for your truck/car.

It may cost more but the details of info are going to save you time and money if you follow the book.

No dealer is without them. :flag:

If these codes are valid I've been told that you need the GM Scantool and a special procedure to bring these sensors back into alignment. The procedure is outlined in the aforementioned Helm manuals.

Snap-on, good. Find data for cam retard or camshaft offset on the scanner. Loosen distributor hold down bolt. Start vehicle and rev over 1500 rpm. Check value for cam retard or offset(it's supposed to be 0 degrees +/- 2 degrees). If the value is negative turn the distributor counterclockwise to correct or if its positive turn clockwise. You will have to rev motor over 1500 rpms for the change to be detected and updated to the scanner. If you can not get it to 0 degrees the distributor may be off a tooth on the gear. There have also been problems with distributor gear wear

With your Snap-on scanner go under "Troubleshooter" then "Tests and Procedures" under that heading should be a cam angle something or another help. This will require a more recent troubleshooter. Remember troubleshooter is your buddy :nono:
