adding a factory nav system

have recently bought an 04 z66 avalanche with onstar and steering wheel contols. But it has the base radio. (no amp or xm) I want to add a navigation radio from either an 04 or 05(touchscreen) escalade. I have been reasearching this for sometime now. What I have learned is that the unit will infact work in the truck and I can retain on-star and the steeringwheel controls. Can I just put the unit in or will I also have to get the amp and all? Can anyone explain exactly what needs to be done or has anyone done this already?

I have not heard of it being done, however it's cabling-wiring and the amp that you will need to install.

The head unit will have to match the amplifier. If you want the Denali-Escalade type, you will need a Y91 class II amp. This amp sounds Soooooo much better than the non-class II Boze amp, you will want it for sure.

Yes, there's two amp types, besides your base radio.

Both use the UQ7 speaker system. Yours is either the UQ3 or UQ5. From what I hear, they should be changed out, a subwoofer & box installed in the console, etc.

The nav radio is set up to only work with the amp(s). Amps in 03 & later are mounted in the console.

Note that the XM is a separate module behind the glove box; it's NOT part of OEM factory head units (yet). It can be added with a kit (OEM-look). or of course, the aftermarket tuners can be connected in various manners.

If you don't have a console, or can't fit one (bench seats) you will need to make up a cable to the amp and mount it under the rear seats, along with a subwoofer/box that'll fit.

Amp types are the Y91 (Luxury) and the Non-Luxury, "Crap Amp", commonly used with the UC6 6-disk radio.

The Y91 (Luxury) amp. is common to Denali's and Escalades. Those vehicles, if not with a Nav radio, commonly use the UB1 radios. (CD/Cass) with an auxillary 6 (console) or 10 disk cart changer.

BTW, have you ever logged on to CAFCNA?

(Chevy Avalanche Fan Club of North America) A must for Avalanche owners. (Other's there too).
