Head unit for 88

hey ive got an 88 cheyenne, single cab, and this spring im plannin to redo the interior and all, including a new system. the guy at circuit city says i cant get a cd player bc the dash isnt deep enough. is this true? what have you guys done about it?

I had an '89 and a '93 (same dash) and had CD players in both. I did run into a problem on the '89 with a bracket behind the tape deck (where your new CD player would go) that I had to remove. Other than that, no problems at all. When you're install the new cd player, the dash panel kit you purchase will actually bring the deck outwards some, and this helps. Have fun fishin' the wires from the stock unit under the dash to the new radio though, its a little tough. HTH

i already have the adapter bc my brother has a tape deck in their now. The most fun was when my bro got the truck it had NO radio whatsoever, and never did, so we made the system from scratch.

My 92 (same dash) has a CD player in it.

 

I've had it in and out about 150 times. It's tight, but it goes.

 

Heck, I even have one of the amplifiers tucked up in the dash behind there.

 

The guys at most CC's and BB's are trained for speed and quantity. Not quality and inventiveness. You can make anything fit just about anywhere with enough time and resources.

 

 

Bit of advice...Get a unit with a remote. Reaching all the way over there is a PITA.

i've had 3 different ones in my 91....all have fit without a problem. my current one is kind of snug with the plethera of wires i have behind it, but it does fit. and if you're going to redo the interior you could probably do something a little bit better than the dash kit. you can get alot accomplished with some patience and some fiberglass . i got bored one day and molded a tv in my glovebox lid

 

im with wingnut, those guys are kinda like the ones you find at autozone....some of them actually know what they're doing, but a vast majority of them don't know their butt from a hole in the ground.

 

i'll agree the remote is a must. every stereo i've had has had a remote.....i wouldn't know what to do without one. i might have to do the unthinkable and reach for the buttons
