Auto 4WD?

Do HD's come with Auto 4WD? Mine don't have it now, but is it easy to retrofit it on? Do you just have to add the different switch cluster on the dash? Is the rest all prewired and not installed depending on the option package the truck has?

I think that you have to change out the whole transfer case and the switch to convert to the Auto 4X4. If you do this I am not sure if the truck is pre wired for it but it might be. If you look in the glove box you will find the RPO Code for your transfer case.

 

NP1 - Electric push button transfer case without Auto 4X4

NP2 - Manual transfer case

NP3 - AWD transfer case for the SS I believe

NP8 - Active electric push button transfer case with with Auto 4X4

 

Sorry,this is probably not a cost effective or easy modification.

The BBL and the Dmax are not offered with the AutoTrac. The HD with the 6.0 is though. I don't know if it is a mating problem with the Allison Tranny and the auto transfer case or if the t-case is not heavy duty enough. It is a completely different case and if it were me I would not even attempt to change out these two cases. Apparently GM has used a different t-case for a very good reason.

Oh, no. I didn't want to switch it out, the problem is that one of the buttons on my switch module in the dash broke and all of the lights in them broke or burned out too. I saw that someone has a switch module for a Tahoe in the classfied forum but it has the Auto 4WD button too. I was just curious to see if it would work on my HD. BTW, the guy that has it listed for sale is only asking $20 for it, a new one is $57 at my dealer.

Oh. I see. Maybe just go to the dealer and have them pull a new AutoTrac switch from the rack and inspect the plug to see if they are the same. The plug could be exactly the same minus a wire pin for the auto button. Good luck.

You may be right. I have never personally sat in an HD with the 6.0. I just assumed because the 2500LD has the same motor, tranny and rear axle as the HD, just a smaller frame rail aft of the cab. There is definately an autoTrac option for 2500LD and there is no power difference from the HD. You can get a Sub, Yukon XL, or Ave 2500 with a 8.1 BBL and AutoTrac! ( Yeah, I know, the BBL's in the sport utilities has a few less ponies). I imagine somebody who has a HD, 6.0 will read this post and clear it up.

As the former owner of a 2004 2500LD, I can assure you there is no HD that comes with the Autotrac. The HD and LD have totally different transfer cases and both use totally different fluids. I researched this before purchasing the LD and found that the HD does not come nor can it be ordered with Autotrac.

the reason being is that autotrac and 5th wheels dont really like each other, gm has to be able to back up warranty claims with their described tow ratings. also the yukon's with the bbl's get more rear wheel horsepower because the transmission is more efficient, hence the horsepower differences, theres no doubt that the autotrac tcase is stout enough for abuse, but can it take it when pulling a gcvwr of 11 tons?

That's what I thought. I just wanted to find out if the switch cluster with Auto 4WD would work on my HD without giving an error code.

That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts.       You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
