Catalytic converter

What kind of life expectancy should I get out of a catalytic converter on a Silverado. My SES light came on. Code says it's the catalytic converter. 107,xxx miles seems early to me.

I've called around for a few estimates - Midas, Monro, Tuffy - they all seem to be around $800 which is about what the dealer wants. I was expecting about half that. Why so expensive?

That could be normal, i would think you should get more out of it. Summit Racing has one that is a direct fit. It is made by Catco. They are the same company that a lot of the Muff shops use. The part number is CTO-9063. The price is 270.39 plus an 8.95 handeling charge. This is good for your truck unless your in Cali. if thats the case cant help ya out.

I thought GM had a 5 yr. warranty on emmision components such as a C.V. Years ago they did, maybe not any longer...

There is an outfit in Rock Hill S.C. that custom makes catalytic converters for about $150.00 each. Sorry, I can't remember the name. I'm out of town right now and will try to find the name when I return. He sell's them at Custom Auto show and I'm sure he told me that they were legal in all 50 states.

Up to 1994, it was 5/50 on emissions, but The "official" federally required emission warranty is only 2/24 as of 1995, believe it or not. However, since you have a 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty, emissions are covered for that long along with the rest of the truck.

There is also a federally required 8/80 warranty on the catalytic converter and PCM, but since he's over 100,000 miles, he's way beyond that too.

Mine are gone to on my 98 5.7. They went at 130000km

$570.00 for both installed.

Does that system have a rear O2 sensor to test catalyst efficiency? Personally, I'm leaning toward cat, since if the O2 was bad, it should throw a code. There could be a fault in the PCM, but not as likely as a cat failure.

My 1999 NBS had the issue. Here are the mileage #'s

34,000=Drivers Side

52,000=Drivers Side

76,000=Passenger Side

92,000=Drivers Side

160,000=Drivers Side

Wow! Are those cat converter replacement mileages or 02 sensor replacement mileages? That driver's side really likes to quit on ya!

Those were all Catalytic Converters. I kept getting efficiency codes. SO I swapped my passenger and drivers sides around and it still gave the same efficiency code for the same bank. I ended up changing the O2's anyway at 100,000 miles, but the converters always looked bad. The "honeycomb" insides were filled with somekind of white dried on crap. I dunno what it was. I used Texaco Fuel most of the time and have been known for high sulphur content, maybe that is what it was.
