allison transmission

I had a rock hit my tranny cooler in the front of my truck and the oil leaked out on the home from work. The next morning my girlfriend got in the truck and i could hear her out there revin it up and not going anywhere. I ran out the door and could smell the clutches in it. I replaced the cooler and got a tranny flush done on it but now when you put it in drive from any gear there is at least a 3 or 4 second delay before it moves. Is there such a thing as the computer training itself back to shift right or what do i do. Any ideas appreciated. I just hope it isn't screwed.

thanks.

Hey mikebsilvey,

Being a trans Engineer, it makes me cringe to hear about reving a trans in gear with low fluid/pressure! The Allison does indeed have the ability to adapt shifts, although I'm not sure if Garage Shifts (shifts using the PRNDL) are adapted all that much. You can try to do several shifts from N-D (15-20) with about 5 seconds between each shift and see if the delay decreases (zero throttle of course). It is possible that a lot of clutch material was warn off and it can learn the delay out. But, it sounds like it is pretty severe (3-4 seconds) My guess would be that the clutch material is almost completely burned off, or some material may have made its way into the fluid and a valve or solenoid may be sticking. Either way, it would probably need a professional diagnosis to find the real problem.

Hope this helps.

Craig
