Does anybody have any dyno test #'s using HPTuners or other editting software? I would like to see how they compare to the various Westers tune #'s. The costs between the two types are very close.

By all means, time on the dyno with HPTuners and an understanding how to use it will ALWAYS yield more power than a replacement PCM (Westers, Nelson, etc) and a handheld tuner. They are all basing their improvments on averages where using HPTuners allows you to get the most out of YOUR engine. Something none of them can do unless they do a custom tune at their office on your truck.

Well put. Time on the dyno using HPTuners or Edit WITH a wideband will yield a more "spot on" tune than a mail order tune can. With the addition of a little street time and tuning.

Thats great info guys, but Iam looking for some dyno #'s to back this up. Iam aware to get the optimun performance a dyno tune is the best way to go. Thus a software edit program would be better than a mail order PCM.

When I purchased my truck in July I was rather pleased with its performance. I knew Torque Management was there, but it didn't seem to be a problem. About 2 months later I posted an article here at Gm-Trucks, FullSizeChevy.com and GMFullSize.Com about Torque Managements impact on my truck using results I gained from my LapTop using AutoTap. I learned ALOT from writing that article. The one part that stays in my head is Ignition Timing Advance is being pulled from a dead stop and again at 3200 RPM all the way to 5200 RPM. Now that I have charted this and can see it with my eyes, I can actually FEEL engine power being lost during acceleration. If I remember 600-1600 RPM from a dead stop is nailed and 3200-5200 RPM is nailed. That gives me 1601-3199 RPM where the engine is giving all the power it can. The average driver and towwer will not even notice this because 1600-3100 RPM is where the engine spends most of its time anyway. But those instances where I want to feel the grunt of power from a dead stop or racing a Ford is when Torque Management intervenes and my 6.0 Vortec fails me. It bothers me that I generate 300 HP MAX at a low 4400 RPM, but only 290 HP above 5000 RPM. It also hate I can only lay down 360 lbft torque. Why does his bother me?? Because the GMC Yukon Denali drops 335 HP and 375 lbft torque with the same exact engine and transmission combination. Why????, reduction in Torque Management. I can see it in the AutoTAP results. With no TM and 87 Octane fuel that number is ~340 HP and 380 lbft Torque. Even greater with 93 Octane Fuel. 335/375 is fine with me w/some TM protecting my transmission.

 

Some people say the 6.0 repsonds well to tuning. The truth is the 6.0 in the HD trucks responds well to tuning..

 

I don't have a lot of time, so I may not buy HPTuners. But I love to learn.

I know Nelson and Westers are wonderul, but I don't feel like waiting for a replacement PCM when I want to change shift points, tire size or thermostat.

 

I will probably buy the SPE ProFlash which should match the Denali's power output. Give a noticeable improvement in Throttle response and smooth powerful reving. The SPE Proflash has transmission options that allow for changes to Torque Management, ignition advance retard, shift points and tire size.

Nice. That sums it all up. Please keep us updated on your future tuning. As for me I will go with the Westers tune for now and maybe fine tune with a software edit down the road. Thanks again for the valuble info! :ughdance:

First question you should ask yourself is this. How much do I want to get involved with my truck? Myself, I am a hands on type of guy, so I baught the HP Tuners program. Have the mechanical background to be dangerous with a computer hooked to my truck. LOL! Something to think about. With a mail order computer you have to mail it back each time you want to change something. How much will that cost you?

 

Have flashed my computer several times to get it the way I like it, and still creeping up on the way I like it. To me that is the fun of owning your truck, knowing that it was you that made it to the tune it sings. So far I have been able to remove torque management myself, set it up to run on 92 octane, and make the adjustments to get the most out of my cam. There are still things that I am learning about, but that is half the fun, the other half is seeing the results from my work.

 

HP Tuners just lowered the price of their program, so now there should be no question, if you are a hands on type of guy. If you want to just plug and go, then Wester's or others is the way to go. Hope this sheds some light on this subject.

I installed hypertech pp3. The shift points, rev limiter, shift firmness, and top speed limiter functions really woke up the truck to stay in it's powerband.==== I really wanted the programmer for the dual fuel tuning feature for 87 and 93 octane. It made my truck spark knock like hell and it ran like a turd no matter what setting and gas octane I used.

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
