Good Extended Warranty?

I currently have a 2002 Z71 Tahoe with 34,000 miles. I am looking to get an extended warranty for it. Does anyone know of a good, dependable warranty provider?

If you get anything other than GMPP (General Motors Protection Plan) you're crazy.

We deal with 'em all in our store and the "aftermarket" extended warranties are very spotty in their coverage, even though the guy selling it to you will tell you it covers EVERYTHING! Also, they look for any opportunity to pass the blame on to you or say it's not covered because of a million different excuses.

Example: We have an '01 Tracker right now that sheared the gear's locating dowel off the right cam. The cams were then out of time and the pistons ate every valve on the right side and total loss of the head, valves, pistons, etc. Their aftermarket extended warranty? "Oh, that dowel pin is not a covered item." Result? A $4000 repair at the customer's expense.

GMPP would have covered this without hesitation. The only thing GMPP doesn't cover is soft trim, weatherstrips and of course normal maintenance items. Plus it's accepted at any GM dealer in the country. Try that with your extended warranty.

Better hurry. You can't purchase a GMPP policy once your warranty has expired.

Do you have any idea on cost?

I don't know exactly, and there are many variables involved that change the cost. There are levels of deductible (zero on up) and naturally the lower the deductible, the more expensive the policy. Also time/miles of coverage.

I'd say figure on $1500-$2000 or thereabouts. A lot of money if you never use it, but priceless if you have a major failure. One big repair and it has paid for itself, sometimes many times over.

You got a 72mo/72K $0 ded for $1000? Can you share where you got it for this price?? I searched around for the best price and even found a better one than GMOutlet (which is supposed to have one of the best prices around) and my 72mo/100K $0 ded, was not even close to $1000, and this was on what was considered a "new" vehicle.

Yeah, I'd take a piece of that action if you don't mind sharing the name of the dealership and the salesperson to contact....that is a fantastic price.

I'm sorry if I wasn't specific on the warranty. It is a 6yr/ 72,000 mile warranty from when it was new.....so it is basically a 3 yr/36,000 mile extension from what I had. It is a 2002 with 35,000 miles on it. So the warranty was up on Jan 1 2005. I know that I will only have the car about 2-3 more years, so this one was perfect for me.

Ok that makes a difference then. BTW are you sure it takes over at the end of your factory warranty as all the GMPP's I have seen (new or used) start on the contract date and mileage no matter if the factory warranty is in effect or not. My 6yr one is running concurrent to my factory one for the next 2 years (as I got it right before my 1st year "new vehicle" classification expired.

I never got an extended waranty for my 99 ZR2 when I bought it 3 years ago. So far I have not had tons of issues. Really minor things that the warranty is overpriced for. I figured that if the truck had no issues within 6 months of ownership I should be fine. Like a Rock, Still goin good.

It does start on the contract date, but mine is up in two weeks or 700 miles. I am taking a road trip on Friday that will go over that easily.
