K&N FIPK concern

With all of the talk we have been discussing on Air intakes, it is giving me the itch to get another one because I personally know the gains they make on the vortec motors. The reason I have not installed one is due to my concern to the type of terrain I go on. I purchased the truck for what it is made to do. Go in the mud, dusty roads, etc. I am just concerned with all of the dusty roads I go on that too much dust will be sucked in. I didn't by the truck to beat my friend's f150 but to get me out of places my old s-10 and sonoma would leave me stranded. Any thoughts?

there is no reason to be concerned- i have had the system on my 1999, 2001, and 2004 and it works well. i have been in all types of conditions, mud dust etc, with absolutely no problems- i recommend the mod

Not to hijack the thread, but speaking of excessive dust, mud, etc...has anyone tried the K&N filter wrap for extreme conditions? Looks like a shower cap for the filter and comes in a few different colors. I wonder if it works or if it's just a gimmick.

No need for concern, the K&N filter will trap smaller particles than the stock filter. you may need to clean and re-oil it more often since its not enclosed in the stock airbox, but you'll love the added performance and protection.

It is more or less a gimmick for looks, It might have made the filter a little easier to clean, but with it you had two filters to clean. I had a red one around a 14" K&N filter on my old 80 C10 w/ a 454 but it never seen anything but paved roads so it never got too dirty.

It is absolutely not a gimmick. It is for extreme conditions. I have two k&n filters hanging on my carburators of my ATV. It is a must to use wrap or "prefilter" for dusty conditions. I ride it in the sand and my engine thanks me.

However, for truck that drives mostly on the street it is not neccessary. It would be good for an offroad race truck. I wanted to make clear that they do work.

I ran a k&N in my 4x4 and work pretty good Although every few months I had to use an air compressor to clean it becuase it would get really clogged with just about everything. My entire engine compartment always a red tint from all the mudding I did in Hawaii.

I can't vouch for the FIPK, but I have run a K&N filter on top of a GM 350 carb engine through some pretty nasty stuff, including mud bog drags, and never had a problem with it, though it needs cleaned frequently.
