Steering problem

Well bought the truck of my dreams 03 Z71 and have had nothing but problems, thank God it is under warranty

 

Trans Clunk

Shifts twice from 1 to 2 (probably doesn't but feels like it)

Int. Steering Shaft rattle

Bad Tailgate Cables

Rado buttons wearing off

and now a new one

 

Pulling out of a parking lot or just turning the wheel is almost impossible with out moving. My wife though I was crazy until I made her try it in the driveway. If you turn the wheel to the right all is good, if you turn it to the left it is very hard to very very hard to turn plus you get a hissing noise.

 

I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow (24000 miles) AGAIN, and am going to fight to get a loaner. They are supposed to change the int shaft and radio, but I want the trans checked and this steering thing fixed. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it could be, or have had the same thing???? Of course I bought it from the biggest dealer in town and there are always 20 to 30 cars in front of me, let the fun begin :banghead::seeya::)

I'm sure you thought of these already but there are several things that could be causing this

-Low tire pressure

-Dry/under-lubricated steering joint

-Low PS fluid

-Bad PS pump or steering box

-Steering box needs adjustment

The hissing noise is fairly common with power steering especially if you're sitting still because, chances are, your rpm's are at idle so the pump doesn't have much power behind it. It's just the PS fluid/valves doing their thing. If it's especially loud, there may be a problem with the pump, though.

 

Some of these you can check yourself but hopefully they'll find the problem. Keep us posted.

Does perfectly fine turning to the right, I think it is someting in the steering box.

The fluid was very dark when I checked it!!

sounds a lot like my truck

I finally got the truck to do the steering problem for the service writer. they replaced the steering box under warrenty it did the stiff turning a couple times since the box was replaced but not as consistent as it was. my power steering fluid also was dark and smelled bad. the trans clunk all i've heard about that is "that's normal"

BRZ71 - Document everything! If you keep having problems at this rate, I'd be fighting for the lemon law. Check your local state laws and educate yourself. Knowledge is key when talking to the dealers....

Thanks for the replys, I got it in this morning and they are going to change the steering box today, or so they say, I deal with the biggest dealer in town so it usally takes a day or so!! I am keeping track of the paperwork.

I can see if it did it sometimes, my Toyota did that every now and then, but this morning at the dealer the service advisor could hardly get the wheel to turn to the left, but could turn it to the right with minimal effort. I think it is something with the valves that control the left turn. Either way, new steering box is a pretty good place to start.

They can check the codes and find out if anything funky is or has happened to your tranny. I had a condition where I would step on the gas and the truck wouldnt move for a split second. This happened a few times so it went in and they said the codes showed no tranny issues. It never did it since, so I dont know if they inadvertently fixed it or it was just an anomaly. :banghead:

Don't feel too bad man, I'll go out of warranty this weekend, and here's what I've had, in order on my 03' 2wd...

 

Warranty Work:

1. Greased Intermediate Steering Shaft, Tranny clunk (New Updated PCM Flash)

 

2. A/C switch replaced, Greased Intermediate Steering Shaft

 

3. Replaced Intermediate Steering shaft, Replacement of Oil-Pick up tube O-ring, Re-alignment of front end (removed rack for oil pan removal).

 

5. Greased Intermediate Steering Shaft, "Service Brake Booster Message" Replaced Vacuum pump in Master Cylinder, Replaced Steering Gear Box with a Reman unit (Is that normal?)

 

6. Vibration at Highway speeds (Following the new Gear Box Install),

Greased Intermediate Steering Shaft (Yeah, that's gonna help),

Tailgate Cables Broke (New Set under recall)

 

Out of Pocket $$$ because of dealership not standing behind their work:

1. Four New Tires to help for shimmy from krappy gear box that is supposedly ok..

Didn't help, tried another set of New tires... no dice.

 

2. Four New Shocks and U-Joints, nope, still wobbly.

 

I guess all I can do now is by the steering gear box myself and put that in, since they keep blowing me off when I tell them the box they put in is bad... bleh.

 

Good luck with yours man, maybe you'll have better luck than I have. :banghead:

At the moment I feel your pain. The worst thing is I love the truck soooooo much, if that was not the case I would probably try to get rid of it right now. I bought it a few months ago with 17000 on it, and now I think I know why the guy traded it in for a 2500HD (not that they don't have their problems either, ask my friend who is on his second alli trans already)!

there is a TSB for a 1-2 shift shudder. The alternator needs to be re-wired believe it or not.

 

 

 

 

 

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one... The PCM flash will help, but not fix it totally.

Condition

Some customers may comment that the transmission slips, a shudder, chuggle, or vibration is felt when the transmission shifts from first to second gear.

 

Cause

A 12 Hz electrical feedback from the charging circuit may be affecting the transmission pressure control solenoid, causing a fluctuation of the line pressure within the transmission.

 

Diagnostic Tip

Road test the vehicle under the following conditions:

 

Throttle position is less than 15 percent.

Engine coolant and transmission fluid are at full operating temperature.

The outside ambient temperature is warmer than 24°C (75°F).

If the condition is present, disconnect the generator 4 cavity connector (2 wires in the connector) and retest.

 

If the condition is no longer present, perform the correction listed below.

 

If the condition remains unchanged, the condition will not be corrected with this procedure. Look for other causes of the condition.

 

Correction

Install an external sense lead to the generator assembly. This is accomplished by adding a wire from the generator four wire connector to the generator output BAT terminal.

 

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery/batteries.

Slide the protective boot on the generator BAT terminal aside and remove the retainer and wire cable from the BAT terminal.

Unplug the generator 4-cavity terminal from the top of the generator.

Remove and save the orange weatherpack seal and CPA from the 4-way connector.

Using the proper terminal removal tool, remove the two wires from the 4-way connector.

Install a red cavity plug, P/N 12059168, into cavity "A" of the new 4-way connector, P/N 12186568.

Install the brown (Circuit 25) wire of the vehicle wiring harness into cavity "B" of the new 4-way connector.

Install the gray (Circuit 23) wire of the vehicle wiring harness into cavity "C" of the new 4-way connector.

Obtain a piece of 0.80 mm/18GA black wire, 254 mm (8 in) long.

Install a red terminal seal, P/N 12048086, and terminal, P/N 12048074, (crimp and solder) on one end of the new black wire.

Install the new black wire into cavity "D" of the new 4-way connector.

Reinstall the connector seal and CPA, from the original connector, to the new connector.

Plug the 4-way connector into the generator.

Route the black wire to the generator BAT terminal, sliding the wire into the small end to the output terminal boot, along side the generator output wire.

Crimp and solder the ring terminal, P/N 02977821, on the open end of the new black wire.

Place the generator output wire and the new black wire onto the generator BAT terminal and install the retainer. Tighten

Tighten to the BAT terminal retainer to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

 

Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten

Tighten the battery cable retainer to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

    • New member here, very long time occasional guest. Saw this thread, thought it would be a good time to contribute someting. It is only my experience and not a claim that everyone will have the same.   I bought my '20 3500 L5P new and have put 99.9% (literally) of it's current ~400k miles on it myself, with over 50% of that towing loads between 4k to 15k, and to me this truck has been nothing short of amazing. For the first 235k I had zero issues, and from there until 321k I replaced a NOx sensor, two failing glow plugs, and three of the notorious injector connectors. I believe this truck is in part, a testament to good luck, but also good care and following a decent maintenance schedule (I also keep meticulous records.) As a result, it looks as good as a well cared for 70k rig, up and down, inside and out.   At some point before that 321k mile mark I began to get a little spooked about the 10L1000, especially the valve body. Word of mouth about potential issues prompted me to jump on the net to sift through all the noise and determine what all the fuss was about. I routinely take long trips, coast-to-coast and points in between, so roadside breakdowns can be '...a thousand miles from nowhere' and a bit of a challenge, and though I had no issues, my guard was up and activated.   And then I stumbled across a chance to salvage some parts off a new 2025 that had been wrecked in transport. I grabbed a few wear items (alternator, pulleys, etc.) and on a whim asked what the ten speeder would cost me. It was cheap...really cheap. I knew some changes had been made in the '24+ version 10L and were supposedly not compatible, but I called service/parts at my local Chevy dealer and asked why and they didn't know. A call to a well known aftermarket transmission outfit revealed it was very likely it would be fine, but to them not 100% sure.   Because it was cheap (really cheap) and I was spooked, I took the chance. Had it installed by a local shop and it worked like a champ, shifted just like the original. At it's first service at 37k, I had the shop put in a Next Gen valve body kit, which after some initial hiccups and rough shifts, smoothed out though with somewhat firmer shifting.   All that said, I have a very serious concern about my newer transmission as just two weeks ago it suddenly began to exhibit a strong reluctance to engage forward or reverse. It was a bit past due anyway so I took it in for service. The reason it was sticking was due to 'glitter' in the fluid clogging the filter...not good folks, often indicates a converter giving out. We ended up going ahead with the new filter and fluid, first to see if it would move and shift, and then if so buy me a little time. It did, and I've driven it over a thousand miles and it is shifting smooth, no noises or slipping. Regardless, it looks like a third gearbox is in my future so I can resume taking long trips with some confidence. In the very short term, my curiosity will have me examining the fluid to check how much glitter has reappeared.   An earlier poster had alleged, in the context of 10L100 failures, that it is another example of how we seasoned citizens somehow descend into hysteria, lose control of our senses, and react irrationally after brief encounters with the idiocy of the internet infosphere. Let me say (and I have used and abused said internet since it's infancy) there is no segment of the populace that has a corner on over-reaction to digital garbage. Just as my offering of experience in this arena is purely anecdotal and should not be considered gospel or all-encompassing, I believe it is still worthwhile information to consider, along with other relevant anecdotal experiences about things like complex transmissions, especially when balanced with other sources.   So to answer the original question, yes I got high miles out of my first 10L, trouble free for 321,000. Now I really wonder how much longer it would have went. Did I 'overreact' to the internet ghouls by replacing a 'good' one with a 'bad' one? Maybe. Who knows, the thing might have taken a puke a 100 miles later. So I'll just fix it again, then move on and start thinking about all the other stuff that will eventually wear out. It still has the original brakes (they're at ~60%), original injectors/pump, turbo, water pump, etc....pretty much original everything. Knock on wood.
    • At peak temperature.  They get to cool down and warm up more, especially those with the external cooler.  I have three GMT900s and one of them has over 225K on its original transmission.  Fluid gets changed about every 36K miles, all of it.     It's not the bean counters, it was the government.  They had to meet CAFE standards and other government requirements.   To get around that, we tune them and modify them to our liking.

    • PCM?  These don't have a "PCM".  Powertrain Control Module.  They have an ECM (Engine Control Module) and TCM (Transmission Control Module).   Do you mean update the radio?     You can check what version you have in the settings page.  Should be Y181 but there might be a newer build they can update it to.
