Hello again, I'm thinking of cleaning out my engine w/the seafoam stuff. How do I go about cleaning the injectors, valves, and throttle body as easy as possible. How much do I pour in the tank? Also do I pour a lil bit in the throttle body or elsewhere? How do I go about cleaning my MAF sensor. Give me your recommendations on how you did your cleanup. Any response would be greatly appreciated...THANX:)

You can clean the injectors by putting some in the gas tank. As for the throttle body, I usually disconnect the vacuum line from the power brake booster and let the vacuum suck the Seafoam into the intake. When it starts to bogg down, I shut the engine off and let it sit for about 15 minutes. When you go to start it after that, it takes a little extra cranking to get it started. Once the engine is started, increase the RPM's to about 3500 and watch the white smoke billow out the exhaust. To cleas the MAF Sensor, gain access to it and clean it with some 3M Intake cleaner.

WANNA GO SEAFOAM CRAZY?? BUY...

 

3 CANS SEAFOAM

1 OIL FILTER

1 CAN BRAKE PARTS CLEANER

5 QUARTS OIL

 

Add 1 can of seafoam to fuel tank. Add 1 can seafoam to engine crankcase. Remove your MassAirFlow sensor. Spray with new can of brake-clean. Let dry. Assemble MAF to TB ducting; make sure engine will start. Open last can of seafoam. Get engine running. Remove brake booster vacuum tube, and slowly suck half the can of seafoam through the brake booster tube. Then, drown the vacuum tube into the bottom of the can, which will cause the engine to stall-out. Let it alone for 20 minutes. Get your garage ready for an oil change.

 

After your 20 minutes is up, piss your neighbors off and start up your Vortec. Get it to run smooth, then go on the road and beat the living hell out of it for about 20-30 minutes. Come back home, change oil and filter, then enjoy your de-carbonized Tahoe.

I got a couple more questions. How long will the exhaust smoke last.. I live in a ranch area, so I shouldn't cause too much attention as if I were in the city. So beating the snot out of my truck for 30min shouldnt be to hard w/o pissin anybody off. Does the seafoam leave any residues inside the components like the injectors, valves, inside the crankcase? Will it mess up my cats or 02 sensors? Roughly how much gas should be in the tank prior adding a can of seafoam? How often should I do a "SeaFoam interval"; like every oil change, twice a year, ect ect.. And lastly where do I pick up SeaFoam; I haven't seen it here in AZ. I hope its not non-existant like 93octane fuel here in AZ! Again guys thank you for the replies. Keep em comming...THANX:)

I picked up a can at Advance Auto Parts last night $3.88. I only have 16K miles so I was just going to run it through the gas tank, but after reading the instructions I'll have to run a little fuel out first. Says it's good for 8 - 25 gallons.

The exhaust will smoke while you perform the service (approx 5-10 min), and for about the first 5-10 min that you drive it after letting it soak. If done properly, the Seafoam won't leave any residue and shouldn't hurt your cats or sensors. If you let it in too quickly, you could theoretically bend a rod or soak a cat. There are directions right on the can though. I got a check engine lt once with a multiple misfire code after performing the service...no big deal, just cleared the code. I usually add a can too 3/4 to a full tank of gas, and run one through the vacuum hose. I like to use the Seafoam about every 5k-7.5k, or twice a year. You can get Seafoam at Napa. If you can't find it, try the local Chevy dealer and see if they have GM Top End Cleaner...does the same thing as SeaFoam, maybe even better. (I wouldn't add it to the oil though)

 

Oh yea, I clean my throttle body with a spray type induction cleaner (I like the BG stuff), and a lint-free rag. Remove the air intake tube and spray into the throttle body, open the butterfly and spray to clean both sides, wipe with the rag. If it's really dirty, you can unbolt the throttle body to gain access to the backside and clean it real good.

 

Edit: I actually do an induction service about once a year or every 10 to 12k, and just put something in the tank (Seafoam, Chevron Techron, BG 44K, etc.), every 5k...I originally posted the 5k-7.5k numbers pre-coffee and shower and just came back and re-read what I wrote, sorry.

Dont use brake clean on the MAF!!!! Use electroninc parts cleaner. The smoke show from SeaFoam is awesome. People will think your house is on fire!!! After you ease a can of Foam through, shove the hose into the bottle and let it kill the engine. Let it sit for 20-30 mintues. After, it will be hard to start the truck back up and will need a little pedal persuasion.

 

The GM TEC is overpriced.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
