Work Truck?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2003 2500 work truck. It has the G80 locking rear, air, cruise, tilt, and cloth seats. I put in a Pioneer CD, a Line-X sprayed in liner, and a Truxedo lo pro tonneau cover.

It does everything I want a truck to do. The 6.0L motor is strong and gets about 17 mpg overall. I live in north central WI and this truck with the G80 goes through the snow MUCH better than my old '91 3/4 ton work truck did (it didn't have the locker)

Maybe once a year I wish I had 4wd just because it goes a bit better in deeper snow, but 4wd also gives a false sense of security. The truck may go better but it won't stop any better, and that is what really counts! A good set of snow tires does wonders.

I have a 04 Silverado W/T, 5.3, auto, RCSB, 2wd, G80, air, tilt, tow package, heavy duty suspension, cloth, with the CD player, power windows, power door locks, and power mirrors. Its Dark gray metalic in color and I like it a lot.

The option combo is very rare. When I say rare I mean it shouldn't exist. Power windows and Power mirrors are not options on the W/T package. I believe it was a special order (like a copo of the 60's) from the dealer. I ended up buying it off of the lot.

So far so good. I have only had the usual problems: steering clunk, slight piston slap noises, a small creak from the body mount teather strap, and some minor brake squeak. I fixed the teather creak by making a teflon bushing and I fixed the brake squeak by appling brake caliper grease to the backs of the pads and slides.

The only thing I wish I had was cruise control.

I bought the work truck because I didn't want power windows. I like power locks, but power windows always seem to go bad after 5 or 6 years (at least slow down). I have never had a manual window mechanism break on me. Our goin' to church vehicle (my wife's) has power everything, but both my truck and my Chevy Prizm (work car) are as basic as they come.

Cheap to buy and maintain, and reliable as hell...that's what I look for.

My '05 Sierra 1500 4x4 is a W/T model. 4.8, auto, G80 rear, tow package & HD suspension package (Z71?),manual dual climate control, Light Pewter color. So far, I really like it. I added the multi disc stereo to it. As soon as I find a source for the factory jumper harness, I'll add cruise control. I like the manually operated T-case. I would love to have P/W and PDL's! I wish the center folding console was availble through the parts dept.

The good thing about the W/T package is that I can always install the nicer SLE seats or fog lamps or whatever anytime I want to, but I still have the less electronic gadget loaded version of the truck. I actually use the truck as a work vehicle, so rubber floor mats work better for me, and I'm not so concerned about getting onto the seats when my pants are dirty. I couldn't even imagine doing that with a leather interior!

Maybe one day, GM will get smart and let us spec-out our trucks as we want them w/o being stuck to buy an expensive "upgrade" package to get a single item that we really want. I looked at, and really liked the mid-level trim package, but I wanted a manual operated T-case, and I couldn't get it except on a base or W/T.

I'm really not sure how the truck got ordered with pw and mirrors. My father is currently a salesman at the chevy dealer (he sold me my truck) and we found my truck at another dealer. It was the only RCSB 5.3 2wd within a 200 mile radius, lucky us that is was only 15 miles away from my fathers dealership.

We looked through his dealer book and we couldn't find the option code anywhere (as on the detail sheet "5B5 Window Power Operated, Side (SEO)). We figured that that dealership special ordered it that way.

Actually it's a really nice combo, the truck has everything I wanted without anything else like side body molding and such. Also I ended up buying the factory 16" aluminum wheels from Ebay for $200, how could you go wrong.

Oh and the heavy duty suspension code is "Z85"

I just recently had my Dodge single cab work truck traded in for a 04 GMC 2500HD WT Single Cab, feature's it has, 6.0L, no pw windows or locks just manual, mounted floor lever shifter for the four wheel drive and just recently i had some 265's installed. No complaints with the GMC, im very impressed with it especially the Vortec 6.0, with my other work truck (dodge) the tranny started slipping. When i got my WT GMC it had plenty of hieght so i went with some bigger tires for the installation. :fume:

I'm not sure I got the work truck or the standard package? I have an 04, 5.3L, 4x4, G80, no power anything, plastic floors, cloth seats. Like everyone else, I didn't want power and this is the only one on the lot that didn't have power. But I love it, great power, looks killer. Since then I added fender flares and a fold-a-cover.

I have an '04 Silv WT, power nothing, extra nothing. Only option was blue paint instead of the white...oh, and automatic. We are talking bone stock. 4.3L V6.

I think the truck is great. I wouldn't mind having power locks, as I continually have to tell everyone whom takes a ride with me to lock the passenger door when they get out. The only real beef I have is I want Cruise control. Because the 4.3L is not fly by wire, I can't just add the cruise control handle off of E-bay and go.

If anyone knows which is the right control unit for the '04 Silv 4.3L please let me know I want to buy it and get it installed. The Stealers can't seem to tell me jack about the truck when I call to talk to them. Took me 5 people just to figure out what the option code was to put the CD player in my truck. (Truck came with AM/FM only UM7 radio)

I guess I got lucky too. My truck was a special order from a dealer 200 miles away although I don't know how it ended up at my dealer but it's a good deal for me :chevy:

04 Silverado W/T, 8' bed, Dark Charcoal

4x4 w/locking rear, 5.3, manual transfer case,

WITH PW and PL and P/mirrors!

Since I've added Factory Aluminum Rims from Ebay( $215),

Fog Lights (Ebay- $85)

Keyless entry (ebay-$50)

Folding center seat (ebay- $260)

And on order from a GMC dealer, I'm adding graphite carpeting. Graphite color is not an option on 03's and up, but I'm geting a carpet for an 01. ( I have a friend who runs the parts dept. so I can get it at cost($202.50).

I would rather do it this way rater than adding $4000 to the price of the truck for the option packages that would get me these items.

I have an '03 Silverado work truck. I am quite happy with it, except for the 3.42 axle. While it gets me as much as 22 mpg (I commute a lot on the highway), it strains a bit pulling my trailer, and a 3.73 would have been a better choice. Oh yeah, it has a 4.3 V6 which is perfectly adequate for me.

I lucked into a 2005 truck set up like that as well, and I nabbed it immediately. I wanted a V8 shortbed auto as cheap as possible, and I thought I wouldn't have much choice....I was right. However, the dealer found one about 10 miles away. It was a work truck package (Victory red shortbed, auto) but it had the following options:

4.8 V8 $945

power windows and mirrors $738

deluxe cloth seat (same one in my friend's 05 LS) with the fold down armrest $285

CD player (with the separate tweeters in the doors) $255

Cruise control $240

spare tire lock $15

Power locks $162

Those were the only options other than the automatic. I also liked that it didn't have the molding on the side, although I found out since then it is easy to remove, but I admit I liked the idea of not paying for it in the first place. My only concern was the work truck painted 17 wheels...not Chevy's best looking wheelset. I fixed that by adding some 20" SS wheels!
