transmission swap

I have a 1988 chevy 305 c1500 pickup it has a 400 transmission coded 88 lba 27736.I want to exchange it with a 1987 400 transmission coded 87 lja 14241 out of a van.The only difference I see is that the speedometer hook up is different! My question is can you change the connections? One plugs in on the 1988 and on the 1987 it screws on other then that they look like it should work. Any help out there! thanks

You should be able to switch out the speedo hookups. the trannys mount up the same and should act the same. I would check the tail shaft length, you may need to get a new drive shaft if they are different. Just my opnion.
