2004 1500 Help

My cousin is looking at buying a 2004 Chevrolet 1500. It has 8,000 miles on it and has the 4.8. The truck is at Carmax for $19,000. How will he like the 4.8? I know that most people say get the 5.3, but this truck seems like a good deal. It makes the same power is the the 2001-2002 5.3s. I really like the 5.3, but have never driven a 4.8. He won't be using it for towing very much. Should he buy it or keep looking? BTW, he needs a new vehicle soon, as his is about ready to break down. Thanks for any advice. The truck is a 2WD ext. cab LS.

I've got the 05 2wd ext LS and it does me just fine. I had the 02 ext too, considering the price they are selling for it sounds like a good deal. If he's planning on towing here and there he needs to consider what he's going to tow as far as the power.

When I first started looking for an 02 I had found a 4x4 with 8,000 on it for $24,000, I ended up getting a brand new 02 2wd ext for the same price.

If he lives where they have snow, tell him to throw sand bags in the back, it helps. My 02 had the 5.3 and it had plenty of power.

Tell him to look it up on Kelly Blue Book to see what the prices are and see if he is getting a good deal. :seeya:

I bought a 2002 with 28,000 miles on it, LS 5.3 Z71 Ext. in mint condition, and I payed 22,000. So I think that price is a little high. But then again, my price was low I think cause the new front end silverados had been out for a year now.

But the new 4.8 makes as much power as the 5.3 does, in 2002? Because I smoke my buddy ALL THE TIME and he is a 2wd.

I have heard all good about the 4.8. Even heard it is quicker than the 5.3 at the bottom end. I was going to get a 4.8 but got a great deal on mine (5.3).

Both engines make 285 hp. I think the 4.8 makes a little less torque though, that's probably why you beat your buddy. BTW, according to KBB, the truck is a steal. The trade in value for one in good condition is $19,000.

Ive got the 4.8 in mine, Its a reg. cab 4x4 but it has penty of power. I tow a 3200lb mustang on an open trailer and have no problems at all and thats with 3.73s. If hes that worried about a couple of horse added a catback air intake and a hypertech problem solved
