Rebuild or replace master cylinder?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a small amount of moisture around the master cylinder where it joins the power booster. Just enough to bubble up the black paint on the booster. So, time to fix that before it gets worse.

My local shop wants $380 to rebuild. They do great work, but this seems spendy. 1.8 hours worth of work by their estimate. A kit is about $30 and a new cylinder from GMPartsdirect is $130. I've read it does not make much sense to rebuild an aluminum cylinder and replacement is the best option. What do you guys think?

Also, the last MC I rebuilt was on a '67 FJ45 Landcruiser with no power brakes and no ABS. What do I need to look out for with regards to bleeding the ABS system if I do the replacement myself. I am used to bleeding the corners w/ ABS, but this would be the first time on an MC. Lastly, how difficult is the bench bleed of the MC?

Thanks to all. GREAT forum.

$380 to rebuild a master cylinder? Jeez, what's the labor rate by you, $200 an hour? That's ridiculous. Buy a new one. The aluminum is usually pitted and not worth rebuilding anyway.

Unless the unit is rebuilt in a steril environmet and all parts are matched for size and bore, the rebuild will not be a good dependable one. you are better off replacing the unit with a good quality unit. Then you will get a warranty, and a little piece of mind.
