etex211 Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 I've got to redo everything on the front brakes of my '92 half ton truck. This time, I will be changing the rotors, calipers, and brake hoses. I've always used the semi-metallic (failry cheap) pads on this truck. They seem to be a little tough on the rotors. These rotors are worn out at 170,000 miles.....Maybe it was unreasonable to expect them to last forever. So which pads are best for this truck.....semi-metallic? or ceramic? or something else? Thanks.
71GMC_3/4T Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 170,000 miles on a set of rotors... ?!? Sounds like you're doing something right! I wouldn't change a thing! Get a pair of good rotors. They're going to cost you more than the el cheapo made in china crap though, but they're worth it. I had original rotors on my '92 when I sold it at 160,000, after 3 sets of pads (all semi-metallic, by the way) it was still in good shape. No warping or fade ever. I'll admit I never turned them, but they wore true as could be desired.
etex211 Posted February 6, 2005 Author Posted February 6, 2005 Well, I have to admit that I've already bought some of the Chinese cheapo ($50 each) rotors. I went ahead and bought the same semi-metallic pads from O'Reilly's that I've been using. This truck is not a daily driver. It sits in the driveway all week, then I drive it some on the weekends. I'm trying to get this job done as cheaply as possible. I've already spent $300 on parts. As soon as the brakes are done, I'll have to pull both doors and repin them. I've got a buddy that is a bodyman. I'll let him do that job and I'll throw a couple of cases of beer his way.
