whole complete catback or just the muffler?

if i just get an muffler from lets say, magnaflow and get a muffler shop to elarge the piping to 3" and weld in the muffler, will it be the same as buying a catback? i dont get why catbacks are so much more expensive. i was thinking of saving up for a catback system but i dont know if its worth the money if i can just buy a muffler and get the shop to weld it on.

if i do get a muffler itself, what should i go with?

borla

corsa

flowmaster

gibson

magnaflow

dynomax

etc.

i want something thats throaty with no drones. AND not too loud. i think flowmaster is too loud for my taste.

It depends on what you want. For my Escalade the last cat was somewhere under the rear doors which goes into the muffler, over the axle, and dumps out the stock location behind the rear pass. tire.

As far as a catback system the manufacturers tune the system for the best sound and best hp. This makes no difference if it dosen't sound good to you or you don't the tip style you want or the tips don't exit where you want them to.

To make a long story short, visit the manufacturers website to hear their product or ask around to see who has which system. Whatever you do, just make sure they use mandrel bends.

PS

The ones that are stainless steel are typically more expensive than other types used.
