I have the codes. P0343 -Cam sensor A-bank 1 Circuit High Input and P1518-Intake manifold runner control (stuck open).

 

What causes the problems and how do I fix them? I have the 2001 8.1L.

Rad I read your other post and what need to be said had been, you see with either of those two codes you'll have to have access to detailed trouble shooting information to determine the solution. I got the '01 Helms manual as a Christmas gift, it's a 5 volume set that covers it all. It cost a little but it's well worth it. If this is financially out of reach you'll need to buy one of those Ebay copies on CD or goto a real library that has Mitchell manuals and copy the charts for those codes on an 8.1. Don't forget to copy the wiring diagrams related to the ECM and engine controls.

 

The P0343 means your camshaft sensor signal was stuck on high long enough to indicate it's not switching (could be stuck there). This could be caused by a bad sensor, wiring damage, camshaft reluctor ring damage, debris in the sensor window, contact between the sensor and camshaft, etc. Without any testing you could remove your old sensor (under the water pump on the D/S of the timing chain cover) and look at it. If it's beat up you'll have to verify that the cam wheel in there is still good before you install a new sensor and ruin it. If the old one looks intact replace it and clear the code. If it the codes gone it's fixed, if it comes back you have a electrical problem in the signal circut. Oh, by the way, the (A bank One) has nothing to do with it, that's generic OBDII talk, the 8.1 only has one camshaft, and one camshaft sensor anyways. For us it means what I said only, camshaft sensor signal stuck on high (closed switch).

 

The P1518 hasn't anything to do with manifold runner control either, I wish the 8.1 had a variable runner intake manifold that would allow it to breath past 4800 but no dice. What that code represents on this application is a miscommunication detected in a dedicated serial data circut between the electronic throttle actuator control module and the powertrain control module (PCM or engine computer). This circut does only one thing, carry a signal from the throttle control to the computer telling it what it's doing. The computer compares that to everything else it's looking at and if it doesn't add up the computer decides it's faulty info and sets this code. I've set that exact code while drag racing at the track. There was a lot of power braking and tire smoking involved. The torque managment programming in the PCM got a workout. Some how the PCM interpreted all this unusal activity as a malfunction and set this code. It cleared itself after 3 self tests determined all was once again well. A self test will be conducted on a fresh restart with a long driving time. If your code is sticking you'll have to have the factory type information to check and repair this problem. There is no part to buy that is cheap enough to risk wasting the money if that's not it.

That is exactly the info I was looking for. You're right, I will have to buy that book/cd. I do not feel comfortable always needing to rely on other people to fix my problems.
