Power Steering Fluid

I have 42K on the truck and was thinking of flushing the fluid, dealer quoted about $95.00. Seems steep. Can this be done w/o special equipment? What about the turkey baster method, taking some out, replacing and doing it on a monthly basis until it is all new?

i used the turkey baster method on mine. it is kind of sloppy though and i thought i read a better way to do it on here after i had done it.

it did seem to make a differnce though - the steering felt "different" after i did it.

the old fluid was black as could be - i was very surprised to see the new stuff was clear!

Don't spend a penny for that. Here's how to do it:

 

-Remove the fluid return hose at the power steering pump inlet connector.

 

-Plug the inlet connector port on the pump.

 

-Place a large container under the fluid return hose in order to catch the draining fluid.

 

-Run the engine at idle while an assistant fills the reservoir with new power steering fluid.

 

-Turn the wheel back and forth, fully to the left and fully to the right. Do not hold the wheel at a stop or a sudden overflow of the reservoir may occur.

 

-Install all of the pipes and the hoses.

 

-Fill the system with new power steering fluid.

 

 

Did mine last summer, works great!

Sounds good. What did you plug the inlet with? How much fluid did it take fo the flush/fill, want to be sure I get enough but don't want a lot of extra sitting around. Thanks!

I pluged it with a piece of rubber hose (automobile type), if I remember correctly,

I think it was 5/16 or 3/8, not sure but you'll see when you'll take it out.

 

At the other end, just screw in a bolt of the same diameter. Don't worry about the pressure, the fluid will just circulate and exit at the open end.

 

I think it took me a quart or two. The fluid is not expensive, keep some for later adjustments.

Thats the same way that I did it, when I converted my brakes from vacuum assist to hydroboost. Works well. Just be sure to have plenty of fluid.
