Does anyone have a roof rack for their silverado? Saw a Z71 today with one and it looked awesome...Any pics maybe.. or does anyone know who sells these and how the are attached to the roof? Thanks 2001 Z71 extended cab

Was the Z-71 a crew cab? I actually thought about something similar on my extended cab but quickly changed my mind for two reasons:

-it would look awkward on a vehicle with such a short roof

-the roof itself doesn't seem sturdy enough that I'd want to put anything on it anyway (based on experiences in the drive through car wash..).

The crew cab trucks actually have a corrugated (right word?) roof, like most of the SUVs. This strengthens the roof. I think GM felt that the shorter roof of the regular and extended cab trucks had enough strength as they were without needing the corrugation. Especially since I'm sure they don't expect anyone to use roof racks on the cab of either of these (beds are generally longer than the CC / SUVs :D).

Several years ago, when my father owned an outdoor store, he sold Yakima roof racks. We were very pleased with their quality at that time, I dont know if anything has changed lately. There are generally 2 kinds, the bolt on (which of course puts holes in your roof), and the kind that clams on through the door sills. Both will greatly increase the wind noise, especially the kind that clamp in the doors. I think that the extended cab is plently long to carry anything you want, even larger canoes or kayaks. I tend to agree though, I wouldnt get one unless I was carrying a canoe or kayak, anything else Id just toss in the bed! And even with a canoe, you can always just get some foam blocks and cinch her down tight on each end.

For more info try, www.yakima.com or www.thule.com. :D

I'd be interested in seeing a picture of one if anyone finds it. I'd think it would look awkward but without seeing one for myself that's just a thought- I'm definitely open to having my mind changed.

As far as whether it could carry anything, I suppose if the rack mounted in the right spots it could theoretically be stronger than the rest of the roof itself anyhow. But unless I have a capper on the back with its own racks I just can't imagine a whole lot of use for the rack on the relatively short EC roof (especially compared to the guaranteed longer area of the bed).

My brother has a Yakima on his 2004 GMC Sierra Extended Cab. Uses it mostly for his canoe, but he can fit his bike on it, but with the height of the truck, I don't think I would throw a bike up there for fear of ripping it off on a bridge. His attaches to the door rails. Haven't noticed any extra wind noise from the setup. Good luck, if ya want one, get one.
