Green Key installation

Recommended Posts

I am going to attempt the installation of my green keys in the morning. It looks like I just unbolt the two crossmember bolts inside the frame rail and slide the torsion bar assembly back. Should I jack the truck up off the ground? Any tips or cautions I should be aware of before doing this? Thanks

It's pretty much straight foward but it is easier if you have the preloading tool. This is especially true when you're reloading.

The way I did it was to count the bolt turns when removing the adjusters before installing the keys. I then put the new key in and counted how many turns it took to get back to where it was and I gained about 2 1/4" plus was within 1/16" from being level side to side so there was no additional tinkering to get it evened out.

Good luck with it.

This is the one I have. You can get away with using a gear puller but that tool is nice because it has a nipple which goes into the half dome recess on the key and lessens the chance of slippage. The upper arm of the loader also it small and goes into a slot on the top of the cross member for a very secure removal and reinstallation procedure.

You can find the tool cheaper than that if you look around. I think I gave $85 for mine and then found it somewhat cheaper elsewhere. Just look around first to find a good price if you're going to buy.

Check out (www.offroad-tech.com/tech/tb401/) or (www.fullsizechevy.com/fscu/fordkeys.shtml/). Both good articles on how to replace keys and the suggested tools you will need.
