Engine statistic on 2500HD

Thought I would share as I found this interesting. According to an article I read, GM makes, on average, the following amounts of engines: 6.0(50%), 8.1(5%) and D-Max(45%). I would have assumed that there more than 5% of these trucks on the road with the 8.1 set-up.

Wow that is interesting, I new the 6.0L would be around 50%, but I figured the other 50 would be about equal between the DMax and the 8.1L. I have heard guys searching pretty hard for a good used 8.1L, because they are a "little" more rare than the other two.

I'm really surprised that the 6.0 is in 50% of HD trucks. A larger % of forum members have 8.1's than those statistics

I did a search on GMbuypower lookin for an 8.1 and there weren't any around my area. They were either the 6.0 or the Duramax.

I live in the Portland, Oregon area and there is not a 2500HD with the 8.1 engine within 200 miles. Personally, I believe the dealer's stance on the 8.1 is dumb. I had one in a 2002 Avalanche and the 8.1 engine was by far the best part of the vehicle. I'd buy another in a heartbeat and, with the Allison tranny, it would be a wonderful alternative to the Duramax.

Good. I like having something that's not run of the mill...

My theory on car buying is to buy the biggest engine available. I don't care for diesels,so the 8.1 was the only choice for me.

Another thing that makes me laugh is the diesel guys and the stories they tell about fuel mileage. I'll bet 75% of them aren't getting the MPG they say they are.

I also post at the Diesel Place, and there was a post about honest fuel mileage. When alot of the diesels guys posted fuel mileage they weren't a whole lot better than my truck gets. IMO alot of diesel owners have to justify their purchase by exaggerating fuel mileage.

496,

Kinda sounds like someone else might be trying to justify something in their mind too?? :seeya:

I owned a vortec 7400 prior to my current Duramax. With the big block, I got 6-8 mpg towing, 10-12 mpg city driving and 14-15 mpg straight highway driving.

With the diesel, I get 10-12 mpg towing, 16-17 mpg city driving and 20-21 mpg straight highway driving.

You do the math.

Don't start, this topic has nothing to do with this war. We  don't have to justify anything to you.

Boy,you're a bit sensitive. Not getting the mileage you thought you would?

Nice try, I'm getting better than I expected. I just think we ought not rob this thread, because I think they should make more 8.1L motors. Hands down, GM's best gas motor on the market. You started "diesel bashing" for no apparent reason. I was beginning to think your sig said "Snoman".

If I could have afforded the extra dough for the diesel I would have loved to have gotten one. I enjoy my gasser 6.0 just fine though. I dont pull anything hardly ever at all anyways. My advice to my buds when they talk about getting a diesel or a gas is always about the same. Don't get a diesel if you are doing it just for the gas mielage. A good portion of people that would buy a diesel with the only reasoin being that they would save money in gas will never have the vehicle long enough to recoop the expense of purchasing the diesel to begin with. However, I tell friends that if they are planning on doing significant towing (ie. weight, duration, terrain, etc.) then they would be better off in the long run getting the diesel. So - it all depends on what you can afford and what you will be doing. My opinion.

That sounds like a win-win situation. We're happy. You're happy and laughing.

I only see 2 reasons for getting diesel. One if you do ALOT of towing, the lower rpm range would be nice. Two if saving fuel for envormental reasons. the price differnce between the motor, esp with 6 speed tranny, neg the it cost less to run a diesel, sure it does but it'll take a lot miles to make the price up. Well the third would be because you just wanted one. somepeople really want a blue truck vs a red truck, kind of thing.
