Installing a remote start

Hey guys,

I bought an ACDelco Remote Start Interface and a DEI 555L PassLock interface. Hoping to install it soon but when I got them and opened them up, it's looking like I'll be needing some guidance. I installed one YEARS ago on a 97 Maxima but with the addition of the Passlock, it looks like a whole new beast. Even though the ACDelco model came higly recommended.

Has anyone here installed one of these themselves?

Also, I did a bunch of searches and found some good info on wiring at a site called www.the12volt.com.

Thanks in advance!

I've been told by quite a few mechanics that its a bad idea to put a remote starter on after the factory because it messes with the security system and fools the system into thinking its being stolen, thus refusing to let the vehicle be started. I've towed several vehicles where this has happened. I would like to get remote start myself, but until I know for sure that it will be fully compatible, I guess I'll have to wait. On the flip side, I know a few people who have done it and have not had any problems. Not sure if this information is helpful or not. Just be aware that it may cause problems and not allow your vehicle to start.

firefighter... that's what the DEI 555L is for, to by-pass the security system when the remote start is used.

I put one on a 2002 Tahoe. It was simple.

I put a cheap one from napa on my 00, working great. i couldn't figure out how to tap into the remote entry system since it sends serial data to the bcm, so I took the factory remote, tied relays to it, and have the remote from the remote start system firing the relays. ghetto, but cheap and effective. :driving:

you can bypass the passlock w/ a resistor if you want to just be done with it. I tried using a relay and resistor to toggle back and forth between remote start and keyed ignition, but the bcm could see the difference when the relay kicked over and turned the security light on. i just bypassed the relay and have the bcm reading the resistor instead of the key now. no problems. <-- what happens when you have a po'ed wife and screaming 4 month old daughter in the house.

I dont think you can do that with the passlock II as I understand.

Ive put a few cheap models in and they were easy but gave newer vehicles problems when the passlock II bypass modules began to act up... resulting in no-start. I put a pretty expensive one in the g/fs car and it worked fine, she just traded the car in on an 05' malibu with GM installed remote start... ide imagine the dealer took it out.

My suggestion to you is do your homework before you tear into the vehicle... trace out the wires and make sure you have the right ones... I never cut wires, I tried to splice in where I could. It seems overwhelming at first but if you take your time and look/think it through, you should be fine.

No remote start, no matter the price is gonna come equipped to by-pass the PASSLOCK II.

You can use the resistor to permenantly by-pass the system, but then you...well did away with your anti-theft system.

Use a module like the DEI 555L which only by-passes the system when remote start is triggered.

I had a remote start instlled on my passlock 2 truck and after 2 years, I was paying the dealer $500 to replace the wiring harness under the dash and remove the remote starter. After doing my research, the only remote starter that will work with Chevy's is the Viper and it should be installed by a factory tech as they are trained on how to install it ou our trucks.

That's not true...

IF wired properly any remote start will work with the GM trucks. You just have to use the by-pass module. I installed a cheap-ass system on my brother's 2002 Tahoe (it used the original keyless signal to activate it). Been on there almost 3 years and have had no problems with it.

I installed a complete keyless entry, remote start, and alarm on my 2000 silverado. It took me a full day and alot of frustration. If you are gonna do it you need to go to your dealership and ask them for a wiring diagram for your ecm under your dash. I did this after about four hours of trying to find wires and it made the world of difference. I used a passlock bypass module that automatically determines the resistance required it was about 20 bucks but real easy to install. Good luck. Oh ya be sure to trace it all out before you start into it.
