So I need a new drivers side door...

Ok, so someone smashed my drivers side door and mirror, making it necessary to replace it. The stealership wants $3k for a new one somehow, so I think i'm going to do it myself. Please help me choose the best course of action here.

I have a 2000my 1500 SLT 3 door long bed

Option 1: Get an OEM door online and swap the window and everything over from the old one and get it paintmatched. Since I have a 3 door, is the front door exactly the same as the 2 door? Any unforseen problems with this?

Option 2: Get a used door in the "same" color and live with a slight difference in color.

Any idea where can I get a used door in the Los Angeles area?

Thanks very much for the help!

I would go with option #2. Search the scrap yards for a good used door, if you have power windows, look for the closest match you can. I don't think the 3 door makes a difference. As for the color, finding a match could be hard,

I would take it to a body shop and get the inner parts of the door painted, mount it, then take it back to have the rest painted. Most painters will not attempt painting a body panel off the vehicle if it is a metalic base paint.

If it is only the outter panel that is damaged, you can have it re-skined for close to the same cost as a used door. I hope this helps your situation and good luck.

Didn't the other guy have insurance?

happened in an underground parking structure with no cameras. i only have liability on this truck since it's a secondary vehicle now, so I can't use my insurance.

I'm going to look into the reskin option. I take it I'd get this done at a body shop.

sesshona,

You can rarely get the paint to match if you just paint the door. If you want the paint to match you will have to blend it into the adjacent panels. To make it look right, you will need to paint the new door and blend it into the front fender and the cab behind the door. Then clear-coat all three panels.
