AC Problem

My 98 Z78's AC pump is rattling and there is no cold air when idleing. it gets cold when you start moving and I took it to a garage and they said the pump will last another year but clean out the condenser. I washed it all out and you can see right through it but it still warm at idle.

have em check the coolent in the AC system, could just be low. That'd explain why when you rev it up it gets cooler. But then thats just my two cents

Could definately be low on freon but if the compressor is rattling...have you checked to make sure the belt is ok? Im sure there is an automatic tensioner on that model but I have seen tensioners start to seize and create a loose belt. Likely your problem is a low freon situation.

IF YOUR AC COMPRESSOR IS RATTELING AND YOU HAVE NO COLD AIR AT IDLE AND THEN COLD AIR A HIGHER RPMS MEANS ONLY ONE THING. GET A NEW AC COMPRESSOR YOU WILL ALSO NEED A DRIER, AND EXPANTION VALVE DUE TO YOU HAVE PUT METAL THOUGH OUT THE AC SYSTEM. IF YOU KEEP ON RUNNING THIS COMPRESSOR YOU CAN DAMAGE THE AC SYSTEM EVEN MORE AND/OR WILL LOCK UP THE COMPRESSOR WHICH CAN CUASE MORE DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICLE

Replacing the whole compressor and everything sounds like overkill at this stage. I'd get a set of gagues on it and check your pressures. My 94' AC would act funny too, and once I had a set of gauges put on it it was simply low pressure.

I dealt with AC trouble for about 6 months about a year ago and after much research I've found it is a complete waste of money to buy any new parts until you've had the pressures checked. My compressor even makes a little noise, but more than one AC shop has said that my pressures are solid and everything looks good.

Just my $.02
