alright, so i was registered to take a class for summer (that was my only thing planned for the summer) and a day before it started they called me up and canceled it. now i have nothing to do so im trying to make a web site. im trying to host the bad boy over my dsl, but i dont think its working. im behind a router but i have it port forwarded to my computer, and the site works fine on my network, but i dont have a static ip address from my isp and im thinking thats the problem.

i realize this isnt a computer forum (sorry  ), but all i need is someone to tell me if they can see this website or is it a "page cannot be displayed" thanks

You're hosting it on a non-static IP address server? You need to sign up for the service that keeps track of your IP so the DNS servers are always pointing your site to the right place. The service has a program on your computer that detects the IP address and sends it to the server, keeping things lined up for proper operation.

I can't think of the name of the service though. My brother uses it for his server on a RR connection, works out good...

yea, thanks. i think i got it working now. i signed up for dyndns.org. That took care of it. i like that littl program thing too. that works great. im pretty stoked about it too. i created two web sites for my family business and i had them hosted with a hosting company, and now that i know how to do this, i can host them on our own computers and for a lot cheaper and with total freedom to run stuff like asp scripts and wut not. thanks for the help!

Hmmm, I'm guessing you cut your computer off for the night or something because it's not working as of 8:37 AM CST???

Anyway, not sure how much traffic you get on your site, but definitely keep in mind that your upstream bandwidth on DSL is MUCH lower than downstream ... meaning that people pulling files from your network (i.e. pages, images, etc served from your computer/server) will see much slower speeds than you will downloading things from 'teh interweb'. Should be fine as long as you don't have alot of traffic at any one time, but something to keep in mind.

Yeah, my computer was on but I lost my dsl, and I had restart the modem, i have to do this every day, it sucks. I need to figure out how to fix this, at least so it automatically restarts itself. But it happens everynight at around 5 oc'lock. when i had dial-up the connection would drop everynight at about that time too. eh, but Ill work on it. I'll have to, if i want to host a web site that i want people to go to.

Yeah, I know about DSL upstream bandwith. I think mine is like 128kbps or 256 kbps tops. But I'm not really expecting ppl to actually go to it (Im being honest). Its mostly just a learning experience for me (so I know how to set up web servers and what not).

Right now all im thinking about is something to put on it. any ideas? if i can figure out a way to make money on it that would be sweet. thanks guys
